NFL Betting Picks — Houston Texans at Miami Dolphins (11/7)
After losing seven straight games, the Miami Dolphins may have a chance to get back on the winning track as they face an opponent that may be even more in the doldrums than they are.
We are, of course, talking about the Houston Texans, who come to Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday with a quarterback change. Game time is 1 p.m. Eastern, televised by FOX Network on a regional basis.

With DeShaun Watson’s future very much in doubt because of all the civil suits against him, the Texans decided they were simply going to pay him not to play. They turned to veteran Tyrod Taylor to kind of bridge the gap between Watson – who wants to be traded – and whoever might come next. Well, Taylor played briefly but wound up injuring his hamstring, and it has taken him a while to come back.
In the meantime, Houston decided to take a look at what might be next, by playing rookie Davis Mills, who did not have a whole lot of starting experience at Stanford. Considering the circumstances that he was thrust into, Mills did okay, with 67% accuracy and seven touchdowns. But he threw eight interceptions, and head coach David Culley believes that Taylor might be able to have a more steadying influence on the offense.
Of course, the Dolphins are somewhat tied to the Texans in the respect that there have been widespread reports that Miami was trying to acquire Watson, but was unsure about what his legal future might be. Ultimately a deal was not struck, and Tua Tagovailoa (1057 yards passing), who has had a cloud over him for quite some time, will be the starting quarterback as long as he can stay healthy.
Is the NFL betting odds posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, the Dolphins are the solid favorite:
Miami Dolphins – 5.5 (- 105)
Houston Texans + 5.5 ( – 115)
Over 46.5 points -110
Under 46.52 points – 115
The rationale was that Houston would be able to make a few things happen with its ground game. But then a couple of weeks ago they traded Mark Ingram to New Orleans, so it looks as if the offensive weapon who stands out is wide receiver Brandin Cooks, who, all things considered, has had a pretty good season, with 51 catches for 585 yards.
The Dolphins, after barely missing the playoffs last year, were expected to be a playoff contender. In that way, the expectations were a lot different than they were for Houston. Whereas the Texans have lost seven of their eight games, which is not a big surprise, the Dolphins have done the same thing, but that simply brought a lot of gossip to the organization.
What we mean by that is, how secure is the future for a general manager Chris Grier and head coach Brian Flores? Certainly, Flores has been in a situation where he’s got to answer the press as to what is going on with both Tua and Watson, and for the longest time, he really didn’t know quite what to say.
Maybe now Tua is a little more at ease running this offense, and while Miami has struggled with the ground game, he does have reliable outlets in the tight end Mike Gesicki, who has 475 yards on his 40 receptions, and rookie Jaylen Waddle, who played with Tua at Alabama and really hasn’t been exploited to his fullest.
Houston has allowed a little more than eight yards per pass attempt, and we are not sure whether that will be something that inspires Tua to go downfield a little bit more, but it does leave the door open for some offense.
Cooks has about 30% of Houston’s receptions, so if Miami can shut him down somehow with Xavien Howard, they may have half the battle won.
We would admit that Taylor’s presence does make some kind of a difference and that the opinion of some, you’re stretching it laying this kind of a number with Miami. But at least the Dolphins have been in a position to win some of their games. The Texans have lost five of their games by double digits.
In this one, we will be laying the points.
