NFL Betting Odds & Preview — Houston Texans at Jacksonville Jaguars (12/19)
Will the Jacksonville Jaguars rally around each other, now that they have Urban Meyer out of their hair? We’re not being facetious when we ask that question. The unwanted drama Meyer brought around the situation was such that it was a major distraction. Even a rookie, quarterback Trevor Lawrence, was moved to (1) subtly admonish his coach for leaving James Robinson on the bench, and (2) discuss that with Meyer, there was a lack of “focus.”
So perhaps BetOnline customers might expect a looser Jaguars team as they take the field at TIAA Bank Field at 1 PM ET on Sunday.

Right from the beginning, Meyer had trouble adjusting to the pros, where you’re dealing not with kids but adults. And we don’t have enough space to detail all the incidents that embarrassed the franchise, including skipping a team flight back from Cincinnati to go out philandering, berating his assistant coaches, and benching Robinson, the team’s top running back, for no apparent reason.
But the straw that broke the camel’s back was something that had happened months earlier. Evidently Meyer had kicked his own kicker, Josh Lambo, after missing some field goals in the preseason. This had been reported to the Jags’ legal people, but did not bring action. Only when it was reported in the media did owner Shad Khan feel he had no choice but to fire his first-year head coach.
And that supposedly gave them “cause,” so they are not going to pay off the rest of Meyer’s contract if they can avoid it. Khan had been a big fan of Meyer, so this is a decision he really didn’t want to make.
But maybe it’s a new attitude in this locker room, as the players and assistants had become plenty frustrated with Meyer, who didn’t have any NFL experience coming into this season.
On Sunday the Jags get an opponent that might be rather “agreeable,” as the Houston Texans come to town. In the NFL betting odds that have been posted at OnlineSportsBet, Jacksonville is the favorite:
Jacksonville Jaguars -4 (-113)
Houston Texans +4 (-107)
Over 39.5 Points -110
Under 39.5 Points -110
Darrell Bevell, who was the offensive coordinator, was named as the interim head coach, and he made it very clear that Robinson, who averages 4.8 yards per carry, was going to be the #1 running back, in what might be a dig at Meyer, who had referred to his assistants at some point as “losers.”
So this will be a game plan that is somewhat unfettered, and unless we’ve seriously misjudged things, the team is going to be a happier bunch moving forward. Perhaps Lawrence is the guy who benefits most of all. The general consensus was that from a development standpoint, his rookie season was wasted to some extent, but there is still time. He needs better numbers, frankly; Lawrence has only nine touchdown passes and 14 interceptions.
The Jags should be able to be the beneficiaries of good field position for much of the game, as the Texans are the worst offense in football. And it’s not a contest either; Houston has gained 264.2 yards per game, and that’s 38.3 less than the Chicago Bears, who are 31st in the league.
The pressure will be on the Jags to produce something. They have scored just 64 points over the last seven games, with no total higher than 17. They have also played eight straight under the total, so that is one way you might want to consider going.
