The Cleveland Browns have been having enough problems lately without going into a COVID-19 outbreak. But that’s what they have encountered as they proceed into a game that had to be rescheduled.

Originally they were slated to face the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday. But because of the outbreak, this game will now take place as the first half of a Monday night duo, starting at 5 PM ET at the FirstEnergy Stadium.

OnlineSportsBet customers will have to deal with the possible player absences, even though the edict from the league has ideally made it possible for more players to be eligible.

The Browns (7-6 SU, 5-8 ATS) are one of a number of teams battling for playoff spots, and the recent failures of the Baltimore Ravens to make two-point conversions have aided them in their continued pursuit of the AFC North title.

Cleveland began its season scoring a total of 60 points in games against Kansas City and Houston, but in six of their last eight games they have tallied 17 points or less.

Baker Mayfield is one of the players flagged for COVID, so it is not certain whether he will play. Suffice it to say that he has not been on fire of late. Over the last four games, he has completed 55% for just 5.8 yards per attempt. And while the Browns have won two of those games, that isn’t going to get it done in most cases.

Okay, so you’re saying that the ground game is the saving grace for this team. But in five of their last eight games, they have run for 100 yards or less.

Nonetheless, we can talk about Nick Chubb, who didn’t make the COVID restricted list and is averaging 5.5 yards a carry – certainly worthy of All-Pro consideration. Usually he has been accompanied by Kareem Hunt, but Hunt was flagged too.

So there we are with that part of it.

In the NFL betting odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at OnlineSportsBet, the Browns are laying points at home:

Cleveland won its last outing, beating Baltimore 24-22, which was a great win but something that has to be looked at in context.

The Browns scored a defensive touchdown (by Miles Garrett) and only registered 290 yards of offense. And, well, they did benefit from the injury suffered by Lamar Jackson in the first half. That they had to go down to the wire to beat the Ravens might be something of a statement about them.

Meanwhile, remember what Al Davis used to say about “pride and poise” with the Raider franchise? Well, they need for some of that to come out after the humiliation they suffered at the hands of Kansas City. Dropping a 48-9 decision made it looked like they never showed up. And in some ways, they didn’t.

We already know that Rick Bisaccia is an interim coach, and presumably there will be a search for someone more “permanent” at the conclusion of the season.

But will that search include another general manager? Mike Mayock, known to most people as commentator with NFL Network, was hand-picked by Jon Gruden, and any new coach wouldn’t be obligated to keep him around.

Even on bad days – well, most of them, anyway – Derek Carr can out up some numbers, and even though he will not have tight end Darren Waller available. But he’ll have Hunter Renfrow, one of the league’s most reliable receivers; not a speed-burner but currently holding the ninth-highest receiving grade from Pro Football Focus.

We can’t be certain as to who the Browns are going to be getting off the COVID list. There are also coaches on the list – head coach Kevin Stefanski, along with running backs coach Ryan Cordell and offensive assistant T.C. McCartney. Jarvis Landry and Austin Hooper are among the offensive players who will be seeking a clean bill of health.

Will the Raiders, who’ve had a couple more days to stew about their embarrassment, be ready to come out with an inspired performance, having lost five of their last six games? We think that’s entirely possible. So taking the points isn’t the stupidest thing in the world.
