Monday Night Shootout | Vikings vs Eagles | OSB
Monday Night Shootout
The Philadelphia Eagles host the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night at 8:30 pm. This will be the first time these two match up against each other in 3 years. Back in 2019, the Vikings won by a final score of 38-20 and have won their last two meetings. Heading into this season, both of these teams have high expectations and are both likely to make it to the postseason. This will be the second game both of these teams play this season and it will be the Eagles’ season home opener. Although there should be a lot of attention surrounding Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson as the Eagles passed up on drafting him and it has blown up in their face. This will be the first time that Jefferson plays against the Eagles so it will be interesting to see how he plays. The odds for this game are currently set at -135 Eagles, +115 Vikings, and the over/under is 50.5 according to Caesars Casino & Sportsbook. The Minnesota Vikings head into this game after winning their home opener last week against the Green Bay Packers by a final score of 23-7. In that game, they jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the third quarter and coasted until the final whistle. Quarterback Kirk Cousins threw for 277 yards and two touchdowns. He was able to connect with Jefferson for the majority of his passing yards and both of his touchdowns. Jefferson had 9 receptions for 184 yards and 2 touchdowns. Aside from their passing game being elite, the running game was also solid as they recorded 126 rushing yards. Running back Dalvin Cook was able to lead the team with 90 rushing yards and he did catch 3 passes for 18 yards, totaling his scrimmage yards to 108 in the game. Cousins, Cook, and Jefferson are the 3 most important pieces to the Vikings offense and will need to continue to have solid performances if this team wants to meet their expectations. The Vikings defense also played a large role in this one as they sacked Aaron Rodgers 4 times and had him commit two turnovers. Heading into Philadelphia, the Vikings should feel confident in their chances to head into week 3 with an undefeated record.
The Philadelphia Eagles head into their home opener with a record of 1-0 after winning on the road against the Detroit Lions by a final score of 38-35. The Eagles moved the ball with ease in this game as they recorded 455 total yards of offense. They had 216 total rushing yards and 239 passing yards. Quarterback Jalen Hurts had a great game as he threw for 243 yards and rushed for 90 yards and 1 touchdown. He was able to connect with newly acquired wide receiver A.J. Brown for 10 catches and 155 receiving yards. These two clearly worked out together a lot during the offseason and already have great chemistry. On top of that, the Eagles scored 4 rushing touchdowns, each by a different player. Running back Miles Sanders had 96 rushing yards and one touchdown while catching two passes for 9 yards. He too recorded over 100 scrimmage yards in the game. The Eagles also benefited from their defensive play as they had a pick-six early in the first half.
I expect this game to be great and have a lot of scoring opportunities. Both of these teams are comparable as they have great offenses and defenses. The advantage, however, might go to the Vikings as they have the better quarterback in this game and will benefit greatly because of it. Expect Jefferson and Cousins to connect on many passes in this game and Cook to give them a boost rushing the ball. Although the Eagles are great, Hurts might struggle to move the ball through the air in this one.
For our expert pick, take the Vikings +2.5.
