Kansas City Chiefs Vs Las Vegas Raiders (11/22)

What in the world happened to the Kansas City Chiefs the first time around against the Las Vegas Raiders? That may be a question BetOnline and OSB customers are asking. The answer is that they seemed to forget how to play defense. And the result was an embarrassing 40-32 loss.

Now the defending Super Bowl champs have a chance to redeem themselves, and it will take place on Sunday night before the NBC cameras. Kickoff is at 8:20 PM ET at the brand-new Allegiant Stadium on the Las Vegas Strip.

Derek Carr is the type of quarterback who can thrive in a low-risk offense, and he is doing just that with the Silver and Black. There was some question as to whether head coach Jon Gruden was going to want him around. But all indications are that it has been a successful marriage.

Carr makes his decisions in a hurry and he doesn’t make mistakes in great haste. In fact, he has thrown only two interceptions. And in the initial meeting with Kansas City, he threw for 347 yards as Gruden won the chess match with KC defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

Neither of these teams is necessarily known for its defense. But one thing we can say is that they are both among the top six defenses in the category of opponents’ completion percentage. But the Chiefs have yielded just 6.3 yards per attempt, which is outstanding.

The Raiders had to endure some absences on the offensive line a few weeks ago, and Gruden was extremely upset about not getting a break from the NFL in terms of a delay. This past week they had to put ten different defensive players on the COVID-19 reserve list.

So there was much uncertainty regarding who might be available at all. But on Saturday they were able to get some negative tests and take seven players off that list. The point that needs to be made here is that they had to do some isolation, and we wonder whether that is the place you want to be if you are preparing for Patrick Mahomes, who has thrown 25 touchdown passes with just one interception.

There is a fired-up Chiefs squad as well. Some of the bulletin board material comes from the “victory lap” the Raiders took with their bus around Arrowhead Stadium after the previous win.

And with extra time to get ready, Andy Reid is at his best. His teams over the years have gone 18-3, and this was much discussed before the Super Bowl.

This is one of those instances where one side will probably try to run it up against the other if they get the opportunity. And let’s keep in mind that the Raiders don’t necessarily have any home-field advantage. For one thing, this is a new venue that they are just moving into. And of course, they aren’t going to have any fans there.

And by the way, these Raiders have lost to better teams in Vegas – Buffalo and Tampa Bay took their measure. It’s not a matter of Gruden’s team being so inferior; the Chiefs are going to be motivated enough to follow through. And that is why we’ll lay the points with the CHIEFS.
