NFL Divisional Round: Jacksonville Jaguars at Kansas City Chiefs

The NFL Playoffs have reached the Divisional Round. After the incredible Wild Card games last week, there are now eight Super Bowl hopefuls remaining. Two of those teams are the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Kansas City Chiefs, who are set to kickoff the Divisional Round on Saturday, Jan. 21st in Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs secured the No. 1 seed in the AFC, and with it, the first round bye. They got an extra week of rest, as well as ample time to plan for their Divisional Round matchup. Jacksonville on the other hand, were given no such luxuries. The Jaguars are coming off an intense battle with the Los Angeles Chargers last week, during which the Jags came back from 27 points down, winning the game 31-30 thanks to a 36-yard field goal by Jaguar Kicker Riley Patterson as time expired.

The Jaguars stunned everyone with their improbable comeback victory last week, but now face arguably the best team in the league. The Jaguars went 9-8, and secured their first playoff position since 2017 after beating the Tennessee Titans in the final week of the regular season. It was a tumultuous year for the Jaguars, but head coach Doug Pederson never gave up, and they finished the season on a five-game winning streak. The Jags are averaging 28.2 points in their last 5 games, while giving up 17.2 points to their opponents, over that same stretch. The Jaguars will look to use that winning formula on Saturday, but may need to reevaluate some tactics against their heavily favored opponent.

The Chiefs finished the regular season with a 14-3 record, clinching the AFC West Title for an incredible seventh-consecutive season. The Chiefs lead the league in total points scored (496), total offensive yards (7,032), and were tied with the Eagles for the league’s best record. Kansas City is undoubtedly a great team, and now seek their third Super Bowl appearance in the last four years.

Prediction

I like the Chiefs in this game. They have the best offense in the league, and with the way Patrick Mahomes has played this season, I have a hard time picturing anyone who can beat them. Kansas City and Jacksonville are no strangers to each other either, as the two played back in Week 10. The Chiefs won that game 27-17 and I predict Saturday’s game will end similarly. Jacksonville has improved tremendously since their last encounter with the Chiefs, but their lack of postseason experience, especially on offense, will hurt them against the Chiefs. Kansas City will beat Jacksonville and punch their ticket into the Conference Championship.

Prediction: Kansas City Chiefs Cover and the Over.

Favorite Player Props

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs QB, Over 310.5 Passing Yards

Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce break records vs. Bucs in Week 4

Patricks Mahomes ascended to another level this season. The sixth-year Chiefs quarterback threw for over 310 passing yards an outstanding 10 times this season. In his last meeting with the Jaguars, Mahomes recorded 331 passing yards, 39 rushing yards, 4 touchdowns, and 1 interception. For most quarterbacks, this would have been their best game of the season. For Patrick Mahomes, it was just a typical Sunday afternoon. He led the league in passing yards per game (308.8) and passing touchdowns (41). Miraculously, he threw for 5,250 yards in 17 games, and was the only quarterback in the league to throw for over 5,000 yards this season. Mahomes is itching to get back to the Super Bowl, and I predict he will have a big game on Saturday against the Jaguars. He will go over his 310.5 passing yards prop.

Trevor Lawrence, Jaguars QB, Over 250.5 Passing Yards

Critics weigh in on Trevor Lawrence's play in Week 11

Trevor Lawrence has turned it around during the Jaguars six-game winning streak. He is averaging 261.2 passing yards in his last six games, and threw for 250+ yards in eight of the Jaguars seventeen regular season games. In his contest with the Chiefs this season, Lawrence recorded 259 passing yards, 26 rushing yards, 2 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions. Lawrence is averaging about 34 pass attempts per game, but recorded 47 attempts last week against the Chargers. I anticipate another huge workload for Lawrence on Saturday, in a game that will likely lean towards the pass, as the Jaguars try to keep up with Kansas City’s potent offense. The Jaguars won’t win the game, but I predict Trevor Lawrence will go over his 250.5 passing yards prop.
