The 2018 NFL regular season is underway and there were a few stunners in Week 1 that have fans and bettors alike scratching their heads. Overall, the favorites came out on top at 9-6-1 against the spread with the total going OVER BetAnySports’ closing line in 10 of the 16 games. One game ended as a straight-up tie and six different teams put at least 30 points on the board.
It is hard to say what the biggest upset of Week 1 was, but the simple fact that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New York Jets each scored 48 points in their season opener would have to move them both pretty high on the hot list.
The New Orleans Saints lost to Tampa Bay as 10-point home favorites and Detroit came out flat in the loss to the Jets as a seven-point favorite at home to claim the top two spots on the not so hot list. Pittsburgh also deserves a spot on that list after settling for a 21-21 tie in overtime against AFC North rival Cleveland as a 3.5-point favorite on the road.
The Philadelphia Eagles started their defense of last year’s Super Bowl title with an 18-12 victory at home against Atlanta last Thursday night. The Eagles were favored by a field goal early in the week, but this game actually closed as a PICK at BetAnySports. The New England Patriots started the season as clear favorites to win this year’s Super Bowl and they held off Houston 27-20 on Sunday afternoon as 6.5-point home favorites to start the year 1-0 both straight-up and against the spread.
Baltimore rolled up 47 points on Buffalo as a 7.5-point home favorite to post the most lopsided victory in Week 1. The Ravens will get things started in Week 2 with a trip to Cincinnati this Thursday night to face their AFC North rivals. This game is currently listed as a PICK after the Ravens opened as slight 1.5-point road favorites. The Bengals are coming off a 34-23 road victory over Indianapolis as one-point favorites.
Green Bay squeezed by Chicago 24-23 on Sunday night as a seven-point home favorite, while Kansas City upended the Los Angeles Chargers 38-28 as a three-point underdog on the road in two other head-to-head division battles.
The Los Angeles Rams closed out Week 1 by rolling over Oakland 33-13 as six-point road favorites to spoil Jon Gruden’s return to the NFL as the Raiders new head coach.
