Tonight’s Mountain West match-up pits two teams riding a wave of momentum as both are coming off their best wins of the season last week. Boise State is coming off a 40-14 blowout win at nationally ranked Fresno State as a 4-point dog that improved their record to 5-4 overall, while the Cowboys also looked very good last week, taking out Colorado State, 31-17, as a 3-point home dog, which helped the team snap a four-game losing streak and improve to 5-4.
All football season long, we have said on these videos that we love to find big underdogs that can run the ball, and that’s what we have here with Wyoming. The Cowboys run the ball on 61% of their snaps, which is 15th highest in the nation, and not only do they like to run the ball, but they do so effectively, as they rank third in the Mountain West and 34th nationally in running yards per game. That’s got to be a concern for the Broncos defense that ranks dead last in the Mountain West in stopping the run and has allowed 200 yards or more on the ground in a game 4 times this season. On the other side of the ball we also have an edge for Wyoming as Boise loves to throw the ball and the Cowboys have the top-ranked pass defense in the conference.
So, why is this number so high, you may be asking? It’s all about public perception. Everyone saw Boise blowout Fresno State last week and the public typically overreacts to what they saw last, so this line is inflated. Also, the betting public is still fooled by the blue turf of Boise State and think that it’s a great home field advantage, but the truth is that the Broncos are just 15-19 against the spread as a home favorite over the last six seasons.
Boise has won four in a row in the series with Wyoming — but only one of those wins came by double digits. Last year the Broncos barely escaped Wyoming with a 17-9 win as a 10-point favorite.
