Ok, let’s get to our Houston vs. Villanova predictions.
With a Final Four berth on the line, two teams that pride themselves on tenacious defense and taking care of the ball on offense square off as Houston tries to win a second-straight NCAA Regional title by taking down Villanova, a team that has been crowned national champion twice in the last six years.
The Cougars scored their best win of their current 32-5 season on Thursday night when as a 2-point underdog they took down top-seeded Arizona, 72-60, in a game they never trailed.
The Wildcats, meanwhile, had a battle against Michigan in the semifinals but eventually prevailed and covered in a 63-55 victory to improve to 29-7.
As mentioned, this is a game that will be all about defense as Houston ranks third in the nation in points allowed, limiting opponents to a measly 59 points per game, while Villanova ranks 21st in the nation and has held its last 7 opponents to 65 points or less.
From a pointspread perspective, it’s difficult to go against either of these teams. With head coach Jay Wright roaming the sidelines, Nova is an incredible 20-6 against the spread in its last 26 NCAA Tournament games while Kelvin Sampson and Houston are a profitable 39-19 ATS in their last 58 games and 26-9 ATS on a neutral court.
These are two of the best coaches in the nation and our guess is that they both figure out a way to get their offensive skill players some open looks at the basket. Everybody knows just how tough these two teams are on defense and the number reflects that, dropping to 128. Despite Houston’s nasty defense, they haven’t had a total this low on one of their games since mid-January, a span of 19 games, and Villanova tends to play more high-scoring games when they face quality competition, as seen by its 7-3 record to the over the last 10 times they faced an opponent with a winning percentage above 60.
So for this Houston vs Villanove basketball game let’s play the contrary side and go over the total.
