The Broncos will try to rebound from an ugly collapse in their season-opening loss against Central Florida last week. Boise State comes in with a disappointing 0-1 overall record. It has an impending matchup versus Oklahoma State next weekend before opening up the conference campaign against Utah State, so this could be a trap game for the Broncos. On the other hand, UTEP will get its first real test this week against Boise State. The Miners enter this game with some confidence after winning a pair of tune-up contests against New Mexico State and Bethune Cookman.
UTEP earned a confidence-building 38-28 win at home over Bethune Cookman last week in a game that was much more competitive than it was supposed to be. The Miners entered as three-touchdown favorites but were tested in the second half before squeaking out the win. Galvin Hardison threw for 183 yards and a career-high three touchdown passes while Ronald Awatt rushed for a team-high 126 yards and a touchdown in the win.
The Miners might come into this game with a 2-0 record but this should be a lopsided matchup on paper. Boise State had last week’s game in hand before collapsing in the second half against UCF, so I’m expecting the Broncos to come out with a vengeance in their home opener this weekend. After an up-and-down showing in the season-opener, look for Boise State’s defense to flex its muscles this week against a Miners’ team that has thrived against subpar competition thus far. Take the Broncos to cover the spread at home in this early-season non-conference clash at Albertsons Stadium on Friday night
