Both of these teams are coming off huge victories from last week. The fifth-rankedCincinnati Bearcats are 4-0 and a major player in the NCAA Football Playoff conversation after going to Notre Dame last week and beating then-number-seven-ranked Irish, 24-13.
Temple, meanwhile, comes off a pretty big win of its own after beating Memphis, 34-31. The Owls have now won three of their last four games after a season-opening blowout loss to Rutgers.
In the upset win over Memphis, Temple QB D’Wan Mathis had a breakout game. This kid is a transfer from Georgia and looked like he belonged in the SEC last week when he completed 35 of 49 passes to 11 different receivers for 322 yards and 3 touchdowns in his third start of the season after suffering an ankle injury in the season opener.
When you look at that kind of performance and see that this is an offense catching almost 30 points against a Cinci team that is a classic letdown situation after the big win over Notre Dame, which was the program’s first-ever win over a Top 10 team.
Not only is Temple 5-0 in its last five games as a dog of 20 points or more, but our database tells us that teams that beat Notre Dame and then are favored by 11 points or more the following week have failed to cover the spread the last 15 times.
