This game is a match-up between the top-seeded Toledo Rockets and the fourth-seeded Akron Zips. Both teams won on Thursday to advance to tonight’s game with the winner moving on to tomorrow’s MAC Championship Game with the winner of that game earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Big Dance.
Toledo got quite the scare in yesterday’s Round 1 game against Western Michigan as they escaped with a one-point win as a hefty 17-point favorite. For some reason, the Rockets have really struggled in recent years in their conference tourney as yesterday’s loss against the spread was their eighth straight in the MAC postseason. Akron, meanwhile, pulled off a slight upset in Round 1, taking out Buffalo, 70-68, as a 2-point underdog. That win was no surprise since the Zips are a quality, 21-win team that has gone 6-2 ATS as an underdog this season.
One of the games the Zips did not cover as a dog this season came against Akron back on January 28 in the first meeting when the Rockets prevailed 84-76 as a seven-point home favorite in a game they shot a blistering 59% from the floor.
Our guess is that the Rockets do not repeat that shooting percentage tonight and we can’t resist taking the points here with an Akron team that has covered five of its last six games overall and has been a profitable play as an underdog all season.
