Ok, let’s get to our Toledo Rockets vs Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders Selection.
The first bowl game of the season pits a MAC team against a Conference USA team, and these two teams have different mindsets coming into the game in paradise.
For Toledo, the season was a disappointment overall, as the Rockets had high expectations entering the year and hoped to contend for a MAC title. Instead they lost three games outright as a favorite of 9 points or more and needed a late season hot streak to even qualify for a bowl game.
As for Middle Tennessee Football, the Blue Raiders rallied to win 4 out of their last 6 games to finish 6-6 and barely get the bowl invite, so they are excited to be here. Unfortunately for Middle Tennessee State, they are down to their third-string quarterback due to a slew of injuries. The team was outgained by opponents for the season, so we expect them to struggle to score against a Toledo defense that ranks in the Top 18 in the country in points allowed per play and yards allowed per play.
Both of these teams benefited from causing a lot of turnovers on defense and that has inflated the number of points scored in both of their games this season and – as a result – we think the oddsmakers posted this total way too high. The Blue Raiders are 6-2 to the under when listed as an underdog and while they average 28 points per game this season, they actually really struggled when facing quality defenses and against winning teams that average number of points scored is closer to 20 points per game.
