Ok, let’s get to our Iowa vs Maryland picks.
This is a great Friday Night Football matchup that pairs two 4-0 undefeated teams from the Big 10 and it’s a battle of contrasting styles.
As usual, the strength of the Hawkeyes is their defense, which currently ranks 13th in the country and is allowing just 272 total yards per game.
Conversely for the Terrapins, it’s the offense that has carried them to the perfect 4-0 record, averaging 37 points and well over 500 yards per game, led by Tua’s brother, junior QB Taulia Tagovailoa, who is completing 75 percent of his passed for an average of 384 yards and three touchdowns per game — numbers that have him in consideration for the Heisman Trophy.
Iowa has been very good in the role of a road favorite, covering 20 out of their last 26 games in that role, but we think this is a little different. First off, it’s a short week of practice, which will make it that much more difficult to prepare. Secondly, Big 10 teams are simply not accustomed to playing a high-octane offense, loaded with speed, like Maryland’s and that will pose a problem tonight for the Hawkeyes. Finally, I can’t help but think that Iowa may be peaking ahead to next week’s huge Big 10 showdown with undefeated Penn State. Let’s face it, nobody really thinks of Maryland as a typical Big 10 team and you can bet that the Iowa players have been at least thinking about that Penn State game this week during preparations, rather than being laser focused on the Terrapins.
Bottom line here is that anytime we can take the much better offense at home catching points, we are going to get to the window and bet the home underdog.
Maryland has won three of their last four games as an underdog outright, the stadium will be rocking with Maryland football fans who are thrilled their team is relevant again and the Terrapins will simply have too much offense for the Hawkeyes, who are not built for shootouts.
