We can tell you right off the bat that the Old Dominion Monarchs have exceeded expectations. They didn’t even play football last season, and now they find themselves in a bowl game. Certainly that is something for BetAnySports customers to consider.

But also consider that in this game – the Myrtle Beach Bowl – they are taking a step up, and must meet the challenge of the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, who have fought tooth-and-nail with some of the nation’s best.

These teams will take the field against each other on Monday at 2:30 PM ET on ESPN.

It was hoped that Ricky Rahne, former offensive coordinator at Penn State, would add some life to the OSU program, and the offense in particular. Well, that got delayed because of the pandemic, but toward the end of the season, the Monarchs got on a roll. Hayden Wolff took over for an ineffective DJ Mack at quarterback and threw for 1783 yards. But running back Blake Watson has been the guy they have built the attack around, as he’s averaged 5.1 yards per carry and has six efforts of 100+ yards in the last seven games.

A receiver that Tulsa will have to worry about is tight end Zack Kuntz, who hauled in 71 passes – second in the nation among players at his position. In the first eight games of the season, ODU averaged 353.9 yards. In the last four, that figure has ballooned to 448.5 ypg.

The Monarchs won five straight games to close out the season, scoring 36 points a game against Louisiana Tech, FIU, FAU, Middle Tennessee and Charlotte. So they are nothing to sneeze at on the offensive end.

But they haven’t necessarily faced a stiff schedule. Tulsa has.

In the college football betting odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, the Hurricane is laying points:

Tulsa Golden Hurricane -9

Old Dominion Monarchs +9

Over 53.5 points -110

Under 53.5 points -110

And hey, before we forget – you can get reduced juice on this game and get a lot more value!

Tulsa has a veteran team; they brought back 18 of 22 starters from last year. One of them is quarterback Davis Brin, who hasn’t exactly been a ball of fire, with 16 interceptions to go with his 16 touchdown passes.

But running back Shamari Brooks IS a ball of fire, coming off an ACL injury to rush for 922 yards. Tulsa’s offensive line has been good enough to open holes for two other outstanding backs – Deneric Prince (508 yards, 5.7 ypc) and Anthony Watkins (579 yards, 7.6 ypc). We figure they’ll try to run first and make Old Dominion stop them.

Tulsa has faced much better opposition than ODU – that much is an understatement. They lost to Oklahoma State and Cincinnati, although they outgained both teams. And they played Ohio State on even terms for quite some time.

So we would concede a quality gap between these teams. We realize that sometimes teams do unpredictable things in bowl games. But the only thing that would prevent Tulsa from creating some distance in this game is indifference on their part.

If we’re making our move based on quality, it’s Tulsa. Going with Old Dominion would be a bit too much speculation.
