Ok, let’s get to our Arkansas vs Gonzaga predictions.
Gonzaga was the undisputed Number 1 team in the country for most of the college basketball season and they entered the Big Dance as the Number 1 overall seed. But the Zags definitely had to work much harder than anyone expected in the first two rounds to advance to their seventh-straight Sweet 16. On the strength of two dominant second halves, Gonzaga beat both Memphis and Georgia State but failed to cover the spread in both NCAA tournament games.
As for Arkansas, the Hogs also made it to the Sweet 16 with two wins and two non-covers against Vermont and New Mexico State, so they’ll have to bring their very best against the Number 1 team in the country tonight.
If the Hogs want to pull off the upset, they’ll need to turn it up a notch on defense since Gonzaga has scored a combined 109 second-half points in their first two wins. The Zags love to run and since Arkansas’ weakness this year has been shooting the ball we expect Gonzaga to have plenty of opportunities to get out and run off of missed shots, which is what they love to do.
Since they don’t shoot the ball very well, Arkansas’ offense is based around getting to the rim and drawing fouls and that’s simply not going to work against a disciplined Gonzaga team that is very good at protecting the rim.
The SEC has been a disaster in the NCAA Tournament this year with top seeds Auburn, Kentucky and Tennessee all failing to get to the Sweet 16 as expected and that really doesn’t bode well here for Arkansas, which was the 4th best team in the SEC this season.
So for our Arkansas vs Gonzaga basketball best bet, let’s lay the big number with the Zags as they’ll run all over the offensively challenged Hogs and score at will.
