Wemby’s Spurs Face The Battered Suns
The San Antonio Spurs won their first game on Friday, beating the Rockets 126-122 in overtime behind a fantastic performance from their rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama, who recorded his first NBA double-double (21 points, 12 rebounds). Unfortunately, San Antonio couldn’t repeat, as they went on to lose by 40 points (83-123) to the Clippers on Sunday. Devin Vassell was the leading scorer with 14 points, on a night where nothing was falling for the Spurs. San Antonio now faces another tough Western Conference test against the Phoenix Suns, where the Spurs are the heavy underdogs and not expected to pull off the upset.
The Suns are dealing with two key injuries to stars Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, but I still like Phoenix in this one. 35-year-old Kevin Durant remains a top-talent, averaging 27.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game. As a team, the Suns are averaging 109.7 points per game and allowing 102.7 to their opponents. The Spurs are averaging a comparable 109.3 points on offense, but San Antonio’s defense has been terrible, giving up over 123.7 points per game. The Spurs need a few more years before they are considered a playoff contender, while the Suns are a well established favorite to win the West.
So for our Spurs vs. Suns expert pick, take the Phoenix Suns to cover the spread (-8) on Tuesday.
