The Memphis Grizzlies and the Chicago Bulls are probably the two biggest surprises in the NBA this season. Then at the trade deadline they acquired Nikola Vucevic and in free agency they got Lonzo Ball, Alex Caruso, and mainly Demar Derozan. This has led them up 10 seeds from last season from 11 to 1 currently. They won 31 games last season and have already won 39 this year. 

 

Offensively, they averaged 110 points per game last season, and this year they are averaging 112.6 this year. That means in the year they scored 164 more points this year than last. Defensively they have improved greatly averaging a point less a game than last year. 

 

The biggest aid to this change in team has been Demar Derozan. Coming into this year people were questioning whether he was still an elite talent, and it’s safe to say he silenced all the haters. He’s simply had his best season in his 12th year in the league. He is averaging the second most points per game in the league at 28.3 which is up 7 WHOLE POINTS from his last year’s average. He is also averaging 5.2 rebounds a game which is his third most a year in his career, along with 5.1 assists. 

 

The Grizzlies year to year success story is just as special. Last year they barely squeaked into the playoffs by beating the Warriors for the last play in spot. They did nothing with this berth, being beaten 4-1 by the Jazz. Last season the Grizzlies won 38 games the whole year, and their team this year already has 41 wins. Last year their points per game to points allowed per game differential was only +1 and this year it is +4.7. Ja Morant is Playing spectacularly and is truly an elite young talent. 

 

Since both these teams are so evenly matched, the only advantage is home court advantage and the Bulls have it along with a guy named Demar Derozan.
