The Spurs Look To Break Thirteen Game Losing Streak | Spurs vs Hornets | OSB
San Antonio Spurs at Charlotte Hornets
By Sam Batz
On Wednesday, Feb. 15th, the San Antonio Spurs will travel to North Carolina to take on the Charlotte Hornets for the second time this season. The Spurs and Hornets began their seasons against each other on opening day, and four months later, face off for the final time after turbulent seasons for both squads. The Spurs and Hornets are two of the worst teams in the league, and won’t meet again unless they make it to the NBA Finals, which at this point, is virtually impossible. San Antonio and Charlotte have each won less than 30% of their games (Charlotte: 27.1%; San Antonio: 24.1%), and are two of the four teams who have less than 20 regular season wins. However, against each other, the Spurs and Hornets are evenly matched, which should make for a great contest.
San Antonio Spurs Breakdown
The Spurs are currently the 14th seed in the West with a record of 14-44. They are 0-10 in their last 10 matchups and are 14.5 games out of a top-ten spot in the standings. The Spurs are extremely unlikely to make the play-in tournament, and could potentially end the season with the worst record in franchise history (1996-97 Spurs went 20-62). To make matters worse, San Antonio currently leads the league with the longest losing streak of the year, having lost their last 13 games. Over their 13 game skid, the Spurs gave up 127.7 opponent points per game, while only scoring 112.5 points themselves. That is a -15.2 point differential, the worst in the league at any point this season. San Antonio travels to Charlotte, to play the sixth game of a nine game road-trip, where they will look to break their horrendous losing-streak against a Hornets side that has faced similar struggles.
Charlotte Hornets Breakdown
The Hornets are the 14th seed in the East with a 16-43 record. They are 3-7 in their last 10 games, but are coming off an impressive win over the Atlanta Hawks, where the Hornets scored 144 points, the highest total of their season. The win over Atlanta snapped a 7 game losing-streak for the Hornets, where they scored 109.0 points per loss, allowed 119.9 opponent points, and had a point differential of -10.9. The Hornets remain one of the worst teams in the league, but their latest win could provide the spark needed to finish the season strong. The Hornets will certainly feel confident in their ability to beat the lowly Spurs. Charlotte is 7-14 against the West this year, but having already beat San Antonio once this season on the road, will feel good about their chances against the Spurs at home.

Spurs vs. Hornets Game Changers
San Antonio Spurs
- The Spurs are 2-18 in their last 20 games and have yet to finish any month this season with a winning-record.
- The Spurs are the 29th ranked team in the NBA record-wise, but have the worst Net Rating.
- Keldon Johnson is the only player on the Spurs who is averaging 20+ points a game. Johnson averages 20.0 points, 4.0 assists, and 47.1% from the field against San Antonio.
- Romeo Langford, Isaiah Roby, and Tre Jones are listed as “Out”. While Doug McDermott is “Questionable” for Wednesday’s game against the Hornets.
Charlotte Hornets
- Cody Martin and Kelly Oubre Jr. remain sidelined for the Hornets and will miss Wednesday’s matchup with the Spurs.
- LaMelo Ball leads the Hornets in points (23.2) and assists (8.4) per game. Ball recorded 30 points, 15 assists, and 6 rebounds in Charlotte’s last game versus Atlanta.
- The Hornets are shooting the worst three-point percentage (32.4%) in the league, but the Spurs are allowing the highest three-point percentage (39.4%) to their opponents.
Prediction
I would take Charlotte over San Antonio. The Spurs are playing as if they are purposely tanking the season, and while the Hornets haven’t looked much better, they have more potential because of players like LaMelo Ball, Terry Rozier, and Gordon Hayward. San Antonio doesn’t have anyone in their lineup that sparks confidence. These two sides have struggled this year, but tomorrow’s match up will be a high-scoring game. The Spurs have allowed the most points (7,114), followed closely by Charlotte (7,025). But Charlotte has been more consistent on defense, while the Spurs have regressed terribly. San Antonio have played 9 games with fewer than 110 opponent points, while Charlotte have played 13. The Hornets beat the Spurs 129-102 in their first game of the season, and I expect the Hornets to once again come out on top over the Spurs.
- Prediction: Charlotte Hornets Moneyline and the Over.
