The Lakers and Celtics played their first game in 1948. Back then LA was the Minneapolis Lakers, and they lost 55-77 to a Boston Celtics team that was founded just two years prior. No one knew it at the time, but both the Celtics and the Lakers would go on to become two of the most decorated franchises in NBA history. Boston and LA have played 299 regular season games, 74 playoffs games, and met a record 12 times in the NBA Finals. Boston won the first Finals matchup against the Lakers in 1959, and the Celtics would go on to win 17 titles in total, but the Lakers never went away and matched Boston with 17 titles of their own. The Celtics versus the Lakers is certainly the greatest rivalry in the NBA, and is often considered the greatest rivalry in sports history.
