Brooklyn Nets vs. New York Knicks

By Sam Batz

knicks vs nets

The Brooklyn Nets stay in New York for their next game, but will be the away side on Monday, Feb. 13th as they make their way to the famed Madison Square Garden to take on the New York Knicks. Brooklyn made headlines after several blockbuster trades right before the deadline that sent superstars Kevin Durant to the Phoenix Suns, and Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks. The Nets received Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, and future draft picks in exchange for Irving, as well as, additional first-round draft picks, and forwards Mikal Bridges, and Cameron Johnson from Phoenix in exchange for Durant. The Knicks on the other hand, made more low-key moves, acquiring Josh Hart from the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Cam Reddish, and Ryan Arcidiacono, and a protected 2023 first-round pick.

The trade deadline has now passed, and the Nets take on their city rivals in their next matchup. Brooklyn is 33-23 on the year, and currently the 5th seed in the East. They are 4-6 in their last 10 games, and are coming off a 98-101 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, where newly acquired players, like Dorian Finney-Smith, Cameron Johnson, Mikal Bridges, and Spencer Dinwiddie, all played significant minutes for their new team. Small forward, Mikal Bridges, led the team with 23 points in his Nets debut, followed by Joe Harris with 18 points, then Cam Thomas with 14 points. A three-point loss to the 76ers is a decent result for the newly formed Nets, but they allowed Joel Embiid (37 points) and James Harden (29 points) to go off. Brooklyn will need to step-up their defense if they want to remain a top-five team in the East.

The New York Knicks are 31-27 and find themselves in 7th place in the East. They are 6-4 in their last 10 games, and are coming off a big 126-120 win over the Utah Jazz. Josh Hart made his debut appearance for the Knicks, putting up 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists against the Jazz. Jalen Brunson led the team with 38 points, followed by Julis Randle (31 points), and RJ Barrett (20 points). The Knicks are in the hunt for a top-six finish in the East, which would let them avoid the play-in tournament and see the postseason after missing out last year. New York is just 1.5 games behind the 6th place Miami Heat, and will look to close that gap on Monday against their rival neighbors, the Brooklyn Nets.

Nets vs. Knicks All-Time Series

Game Thread: Knicks vs. Nets- 04/06/22 - Posting and Toasting

The Nets and Knicks began their series in 1976 when they both went by New York as their city. In 1977, the Nets moved to New Jersey where they stayed for 35 years. But in 2012, the Nets moved once again, making Brooklyn their new home. During that time, the Nets and Knicks have played a total of 208 regular season games. The Nets hold a slight lead in the Battle of the Boroughs with 107 wins, while the Knicks trail with 101 wins. The two New York sides have played twice this year, each resulting in a win for the Nets. The Knicks are averaging 100.0 points against the Nets this season, and the Nets are averaging 117.0 points against the Knicks. However, the Nets have gone through another transformation, and are not at all the same team they were when they last faced the Knicks. The Knicks retained most of the same players, and now seek their first win of the season against their city rivals.

Nets vs. Knicks Game Changers

Brooklyn Nets

  • Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are no longer members of the Brooklyn Nets organization. They were traded away for a handful of players and several first-round draft picks.
  • Brooklyn shooting guard, Seth Curry, missed their last game against the 76ers because of a thigh injury. He has not yet been cleared for Monday’s matchup with the Knicks.
  • Brooklyn is averaging 113.4 points, 113.8 opponents points, and are 2-3 since making the Durant and Irving trades.

New York Knicks

  • Cam Reddish, who was averaging 8.4 points for New York, was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Josh Hart, who was averaging 9.5 points for Portland.
  • Julius Randle, Jalen Brunson, and RJ Barrett are all averaging 20+ points per game for the Knicks, and are all healthy.
  • New York is averaging 114.4 points, 113.6 opponent points, and are 3-2 in their last 5 games.

Prediction

I like the New York Knicks in this one. The Nets are still adjusting to their new team after the monumental moves they made around the trade deadline (Feb. 9th). The Knicks are .500 at home, with a point differential of -0.2 in their last 10 games, but the Nets have struggled on defense in their last 10 matchups, giving up 119.4 opponent points over that same stretch, resulting in a -3.3 point differential and a 4-6 record. The Nets have no clear leader on offense, while the Knicks have three talented scorers in RJ Barrett, Jalen Brunson, and Julius Randle, who can take over the game, and secure New York’s first win of the season against Brooklyn.

  • Prediction: New York Knicks Moneyline and the Over.
