Matchup: New York Knicks vs. Philadelphia 76ers

We all thought that the return of Joel Embiid would spark the Sixers to take control of the postseason, but after two games against the New York Knicks, Philadelphia finds themselves in a two game hole. The Knicks head to Philly for Game 3 with a 2-0 series lead, putting the pressure on the Sixers in their first home game of the First Round. If Philly loses they’ll fall into the dreaded 0-3 deficit, a hole no team has ever climbed out of. The Sixers came close in Game 2, but after a chaotic sequence that has to be seen to believe, click here, the Knicks took a late game lead, and the Sixers postseason troubles continued. Philly is favored in Game 3, priced at -205, but the Knicks are full of confidence and have the Sixers on the ropes.

Knicks vs. 76ers Head-to-Head History

  • Regular & Post Season Games: 507 (1949-2024)
  • All-time Series: Knicks: 222 wins; 76ers: 285 wins
  • Season Series: Knicks 3-1
  • Playoff Series: Knicks 2-0

Game 3 will mark the 508th all-time meeting between the Knicks and Sixers. It’s one of the oldest rivalries in the NBA, dating back to 1949 when New York and Philly played their first game. The Sixers lead the all-time series but the Knicks have the advantage this year, posting a 3-1 record against Philadelphia in the regular season, and now enter Game 3 with a 2-0 series lead. In their First Round matchup, the Knicks are averaging 107.5 points per game, while the Sixers are averaging 102.5 points per game. Despite the return of Joel Embiid, who lead the NBA in scoring before getting injured, New York has held Philly under 105 points in both matchups, well below the Sixers scoring average.

Knicks vs. 76ers Best Player Prop

Tyrese Maxey; Over 27.5 points (-106)

Embiid gets most of the attention in Philadelphia, but without Tyrese Maxey the Sixers would have never made the playoffs. Averaging 25.9 points per game, Maxey was named this year’s Most Improved Player. The award is well deserved, but Maxey would trade it away in an instant if it meant advancing to the next round. Against the Knicks Maxey is leading the Sixers with 34 points per game, and in a must-win Game 3, with Joel Embiid questionable, bet on Tyrese Maxey to shoulder the load for the Sixers. His quickness and agility make him a nightmare to defend, and so far the Knicks don’t have an answer, so I’m taking the over on Tyrese Maxey’s 27.5 point player prop.

Knicks vs. 76ers Prediction

So far the Knicks have controlled the series, but the Sixers will get back on track in Game 3. Joel Embiid is questionable to play, but it’s been reported that the NBA’s reigning MVP will suit up for Thursday’s pivotal Game 3, and push through the pain. Embiid clearly isn’t at full strength, so the Sixers need the rest of the team to step up. Maxey and EMbiid are averaging 30+ points per game, but the next highest scorer is Kyler Lowry at 13 points per game. That’s not going to fly against a talented Knicks squad, and if the Sixers can’t get it together, their once promising season will come to an abrupt end.

It’ll be a close game, but home court advantage will give the Sixers a much needed boost. Philly won over 60% of their home games this season, and after a Game 2 they know they should have won, the Sixers will be on a warpath. The NBA announced that the officials missed a crucial foul that would have sent Tyrese Maxey to the line, likely securing a Game 2 win for the Sixers. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but I expect Philadelphia to come out fired up in Game 3. It’ll be tight, as the Knicks are playing too well to be blown out, but the vengeful Sixers will secure their first win of the series.
