Rockets Dominant Defense Meets Offensive Power, Jackson Jr. Leads the Charge

Houston Rockets vs. Memphis Grizzlies

In a thrilling Western Conference showdown, the Houston Rockets will face the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday night at Grind City, with the game scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. ET tip-off. The Rockets enter the contest as 3.5-point favorites, and the over/under for the game is set at 228.5 total points.

Both teams are playing strong basketball heading into this matchup. Houston (24-12) recently defeated the Washington Wizards 135-112, improving to 7-3 SU over their last ten games. Memphis (24-13), fresh off a 119-104 win over the Dallas Mavericks, has been just as solid, going 6-4 SU in its last ten.

Houston has had the upper hand in recent matchups, having won four of the last five meetings with Memphis, including a 128-108 victory on October 25. However, Memphis holds a strong historical advantage, winning five consecutive games before that.

Houston Rockets: Offensive Firepower and Defensive Dominance

Houston has been impressive this season, currently sitting 6th in NET rating, with top-tier defensive efficiency and a balanced offensive attack. In their last game, the Rockets put up an eye-popping 135 points against Washington, shooting 51% from the field and hitting 15 three-pointers (39.5%). They also excelled at getting to the free-throw line, knocking down 20 of 23 attempts, and dominated inside, scoring 62 points in the paint.

Jalen Green continues to lead the charge for Houston, averaging 20.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. As the primary scorer, he has been a consistent threat both inside and beyond the arc. Alongside Green, Alperen Sengun has emerged as a key playmaker, contributing 19.0 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game. Sengun’s versatility makes him a matchup nightmare, capable of both scoring and facilitating for his teammates.

Fred VanVleet, the Rockets’ veteran point guard, adds 14.9 points and 6.0 assists per game, while Dillon Brooks brings toughness and scoring, averaging 13.6 points and 3.9 rebounds.

Despite their offensive firepower, the Rockets rank 29th in three-point shooting percentage (32.8%), which has been a limitation for them. However, their 3rd-ranked defense more than compensates for their offensive inefficiencies. Houston gives up just 106.8 points per game (3rd in the league) and limits opponents to only 44.3% shooting from the field (2nd). Their defense has been particularly effective in defending the perimeter, holding opponents to a 35.7% shooting rate from beyond the arc (12th).

Memphis Grizzlies: Jaren Jackson Jr. Takes Center Stage

Memphis enters this game with a dynamic offensive attack, ranking 1st in the league in points per game (123.1). However, they are without their star point guard Ja Morant, who remains sidelined. This opens the door for Jaren Jackson Jr. to carry the load offensively. Jackson was outstanding in Memphis’ last game, scoring 35 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in a 119-104 victory over Dallas. The big man is having an exceptional season, averaging 22.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game, making him a force on both ends of the floor.

With Morant out, Jackson has stepped into a more prominent role as the team’s primary scoring option. His ability to stretch the floor and dominate inside makes him one of the toughest matchups in the league. Alongside Jackson, Jaylen Wells (11.8 PPG) and Scotty Pippen Jr. (11.0 PPG, 4.9 APG) have also been crucial contributors to the Grizzlies’ success. Zach Edey, the towering center, provides strong inside presence with 10.6 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.

Memphis’ offense ranks 6th in offensive rating, shooting a stellar 48.2% from the field (5th in the league) and 36.9% from three-point range (11th). Despite these offensive strengths, their defense has been somewhat vulnerable. The Grizzlies rank 21st in points allowed (114.7), and while they defend the perimeter well (3rd in 3P% defense at 34.2%), they struggle at times with limiting overall points, allowing 44.5% shooting from the field (3rd worst in the league).

Conclusion

While Memphis boasts one of the most potent offenses in the league, the Rockets’ stifling defense should be enough to contain their scoring and get the win. Look for Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun to lead Houston to victory, while Jaren Jackson Jr. will continue to do all he can to keep Memphis in the game.
