Phoenix Is In but LA Needs The Win | Clippers vs Suns | OSB
Los Angeles Clippers at Phoenix Suns
By Sam Batz
On Sunday, April 9th the LA Clippers will take on the Phoenix Suns in their last game of the regular season (3:30 PM EST, Bally Sports/NBA League Pass). The Suns lead the series 1-2 over the Clippers. Phoenix averages 110.0 points per game against Los Angeles, while the Clippers average 102.0 points per game against the Suns. Phoenix is locked in as the No. 4 seed and can neither drop nor improve their place in the standings. Conversely, the LA Clippers future is much more uncertain, as it’s equally possible that they fall out of the top-6 or end the year as the No. 5 seed. Only time will tell, but after Sunday, we will have our playoff and play-in matchups.
Los Angeles Clippers Breakdown
The Clippers are 42-38 (52.5%) and are currently the 6th seed in the West, however their fate has yet to be decided. The Clippers have neither clinched the playoffs nor the play-in, although they have clinched a spot in one of the two. LA’s season will not end on Sunday, but a win over the Sun would keep them out of the play-in, and into the playoffs, for the 8th time in 10 seasons. The Clippers are a middling team with just a 3% chance to make it to the finals. However, LA can shoot the three-ball very well (38.3%; 3rd in NBA) and if they catch fire, don’t be surprised if the Clippers make a deep run in the playoffs.
Phoenix Suns Breakdown
The Phoenix Suns are 45-36 (55.6%) and clinched a playoff position for the third straight season. The Suns will be the 4 seed in the West and will face whoever ends up as the No. 5 seed in the First Round. The Suns have a 9% chance to make it back to the Finals, but after adding 12x All-Star Kevin Durant to the lineup, Phoenix is looking like a legitimate title contender. With nowhere to go, the Suns are expected to sit most, if not all, of their starters. Any injuries now could derail Phoenix completely, so head coach Monty Williams is highly likely to play it safe by benching his best.

Clippers vs. Suns: Game Changers
Los Angeles Clippers
- Paul George leads the Clippers with 23.8 points per game, but the 8x All-Star is Out with a knee injury and has no timetable for a return; he has played 56 games this season
- Kawhi Leonard averages 23.7 points per game and has been the Clippers offensive engine when he is healthy; he has played 50 games this season
- The Clippers are Russell Westbrook’s newest team; the 9x All-Star is averaging 15.1 points per game and is 9-10 (47.4%) with the Clippers
Phoenix Suns
- The Suns have a long list of questionable/day-to-day players on the injury report
- Devin Booker leads the Suns with 27.8 points per game but is Doubtful and will likely be rested
- With Phoenix likely resting several key players, bench guys like Cameron Payne, Torrey Craig, and Josh Okogie will lead the charge on Sunday
Clippers vs. Suns Prediction
Take the Los Angeles Clippers to win on Sunday. The Suns are essentially locked into the 4 seed and are highly likely to rest many of their key players. Phoenix did this on Friday in their loss to the Lakers, so it’s safe to assume they will do it again. The Clippers face the Portland Trail Blazers the night before traveling to Phoenix, LA is 4-10 in games on no rest. But with the Suns sitting their best players, and the Clippers still fighting for a playoff position, Los Angeles should collect the win on Sunday.
