Pelicans Look to Bounce Back Against Pistons
The 2-1 New Orleans Pelicans are off to a great start. They stumbled in their last outing, losing to the Warriors 102-130 at home, but this Pelicans team has a lot of potential. Zion Williamson is at full strength, and finally has the supporting cast he’s needed. Williamson, CJ McCollum, and Brandon Ingram are combining for 62.8 points per game, while big man Jonas Valanciunas is gobbling up the rebounds. New Orleans lacks depth, but if their Big-3 can stay healthy, the Pelicans will be tough to beat.
The Detroit Pistons are 2-2, and with Cade Cunningham back from injury, they’ll be better than they were last season. Detroit finished last in the East with a 17-65 record in 2022, and while they remain one of the youngest teams in the league, the Pistons have already shown improvements. They have nothing to lose, and under former Coach of the Year Monty Williams, the Pistons could be a surprisingly decent team.
However, I like the Pelicans here. The Pistons added some much needed height with the addition of 6’ 10” Center Jalen Duren, but because of an ankle injury, Duren is questionable for this matchup. Last season, Pelican’s big man Jonas Valanciunas went nuclear on the Pistons, recording 33 points and 16 rebounds, and if Duren can’t go, Valanciunas will dominate once again. Regardless, even if Duren plays, there’s still Zion Williamson to worry about, and the Pistons just don’t have the personnel to stop him.
