This Sunday is the final day of the NBA regular season. Every team from both conference’s will play, and while the postseason picture is nearly complete, there are a few matchups that could change the landscape of the playoffs. One such matchup is between the Los Angeles Laker and the New Orleans Pelicans. Win or lose the Lakers are in the play-in, but if the Pelicans win on Sunday they will secure the 6th seed and an automatic playoff berth. If New Orleans loses they risk falling out of the top-6 and into the play-in as the 7th seed if the Suns win their final game.

Lakers vs. Pelicans Matchup History

  • Regular Season Games: 74 (2002-2024)
  • All-time Series: Lakers 46 wins; Pelicans 28 wins
  • Season Series: Lakers 2-1

Sunday will be the 75th all-time regular season meeting between the Lakers and Pelicans. The series is a relatively new one, starting just 22 years ago in 2002. Compared to some NBA matchups, the Lakers vs. Pelicans series is in its infancy. LA leads the all-time series (46-28), as well as the season series (2-1). Through  three games the Lakers are averaging 127.0 points per game and allowing 113.3 points to the Pelicans. However, LA’s singular loss to New Orleans this season came on the road, where the Lakers were blown out 109-129.

Lakers vs. Pelicans Prediction

With home court advantage on their side, I’m going with the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday. The Pels are red-hot, winning 4 consecutive games while putting up 118.0 points per, but what’s even more impressive is the Pelicans defense, holding opponents to less than 110 points over their winning streak. New Orleans has the 6th ranked defense in the NBA, and with Brandon Ingram expected to make his return, the Pelicans will be even better. If the Lakers lose they risk falling to 9th in the West, but win or lose LA is in the play-in. That’s not the case for the Pels as New Orleans has a lot more to lose than just the game, so I’m betting that the Pelicans come out swinging and secure the win in the final game of the regular season.

Lakers vs. Pelicans predictions:

  • Moneyline Pick: New Orleans Pelicans (-155)

If you take the Pelicans Moneyline (-155): You risk $155 to win $100, for a total payout of $255, if the Pelicans win straight up.

  • ATS Pick: New Orleans Pelicans (-3.5)

If you take the Pelicans to Cover the -3.5 Spread (-110): You risk $110 to win $100, for a total payout of $210, if the Pelicans win the game by 4 points or more.

  • O/U Pick: Under (229)

If you take the Under on 229 total points (-110): You risk $110 to win $100, for a total payout of $210, if the Lakers and Pelicans combine for less than 229 points.
