Brooklyn Nets at San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs will host the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday, Jan. 17th in San Antonio’s AT&T Center for a matchup between two sides in search of a victory. The Spurs have lost their last five games and are 2-8 in their last ten. Brooklyn has dropped two games in a row without Kevin Durant in the lineup and will need to prove to everyone, including themselves, that they can win without the 12-time All-Star. 

The Spurs are 13-31 and currently sit in 14th place in the Western Conference. They are 17.5 games behind the conference leaders and are extremely unlikely to make the postseason. It is a rebuilding year for the once dominant San Antonio Spurs. They have a young team and are using this season as a means to get them more experience. The Spurs will have great odds in the draft lottery and will be a favorite to receive the number one pick. San Antonio is 5-24 against the West, which is a win-rate of 17.2%. However, they are 8-7 against the East; a 53.3% win-rate. The Spurs don’t have much of a chance against the Nets, but it is worth highlighting how much better they have been against East Conference sides this season. The Nets will need to come ready to play in order to avoid falling victim to the trap game. 

Brooklyn is currently in second place in the East with a 27-15 record. They are 4.5 games behind the conference leading Boston Celtics, and after losing Kevin Durant to a knee injury, the Nets have not won a game. Granted, it has only been two games without KD in the lineup, but the void Durant left in the Nets offense is evident. Brooklyn has averaged just 100.0 points in their last two games without KD, losing 112-102 to Oklahoma City in their most recent contest. The Nets will look to avoid a three-game losing streak, especially against a lower-tier team like the San Antonio Spurs.

Moreover, the Nets defense is too good for the 27th ranked San Antonio offense. Brooklyn has allowed 107.8 points to the opposition in their last 10 games, and will continue that dominance against a Spurs offense who have scored less than 110 points 14 times. 

The Spurs are shooting less than 35% from three, and don’t have the size or skill in the paint to compete with Brooklyn down-low. San Antonio will struggle to score against Brooklyn, even with home advantage, where the Spurs are 8-15 on the year. Without Kevin Durant, the Nets are not the same team.
