Matchup: Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Indiana Pacers

The NBA season continues with a must-watch matchup between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Indiana Pacers. The T-Wolves are leading the West with a 43-19 record, but the lead is slim. Minnesota could lose their advantage with just a single loss, and the Wolves face a tough test in their next matchup. The Indiana Pacers are 7th in the East, but they lead in the NBA in scoring, averaging 123.5 points per game. Contrary to the Pacers, defense is Minnesota’s strong suit, as they allow the fewest points per game (106.5) in the NBA. It’s a battle between the best offense and the best defense, and I can’t wait to see how it ends.

Timberwolves vs. Pacers History

It’s a rare pairing, as the Minnesota Timberwolves have only played the Indiana Pacers 67 times. The series began 35-years ago in 1989, and this Thursday will mark the 68th all-time matchup between the Pacers and the Timberwolves. Indiana leads the series with a 41-26 record over Minnesota, but the Timberwolves currently hold a 5-game win streak over Indiana. The last time the Pacers beat the Timberwolves was in 2021, and unfortunately for Indiana, they are the underdogs once again. Minnesota beat the Pacers 127-109 in their first matchup this season (Dec. 16, 2023), a game that showcased the dominance of the Timberwolves defense. The Pacers have a tough task ahead of them, but at least they have home-court advantage this time.

Timberwolves vs. Pacers Game Predictions

In a battle of offense versus defense, I’m going with defense and taking the Minnesota Timberwolves to beat the Indiana Pacers at home. According to NBA Advanced Stats, the Pacers have the 2nd-best offensive rating, while the Timberwolves have the best defensive rating. In the first matchup defense won, as Minnesota held Indiana to just 109 points, while the Pacers gave up 127 points to the Timberwolves. I’m expecting a similar result in this one. The Pacers have a top-tier offense, but they often struggle against good defensive teams, and you won’t find a better defense than the Timberwolves.

Minnsota is the right pick in this one. Simply put, we know the Timberwolves can stop the Pacers high-flying offense, but can Indiana stop Minnesota? The answer is no. The Pacers are giving up 122.0 opponent points per game, and allowed 127 points the last time they faced the Wolves. Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards is leading the team with 26.1 PPG, and while the Pacers have a roster full of scorers, Indiana’s defense has been their biggest weakness, and it will hurt them against the Timberwolves.

In summary, here are my picks for the Timberwolves vs. Pacers Thursday night matchup:

  • Moneyline Pick: Minnesota Timberwolves (-130)

If you take the Timberwolves Moneyline (-130): You risk $130 to win $100, for a total payout of $230, if the Timberwolves win straight up.

  • ATS Pick: Minnesota Timberwolves (-2)

If you take the Timberwolves to Cover the -2 Spread (-110): You risk $110 to win $100, for a total payout of $210, if the Timberwolves win by more than 2-points.

  • O/U Pick: Under (230.5)

If you take the Under on 230.5 total points (-110): You risk $110 to win $100, for a total payout of $210, if the Timberwolves and Pacers combine for less than 231 points.
