NBA Playoff Odds — Injuries to Giannis, Young Impact Bucks-Hawks Series

When you’ve got superstars like Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks and Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks injured, you can imagine how difficult it is to handicap a game like that.

Yet in this day and age, the oddsmakers have to put up a number on it, so there it is, and there’s the opportunity. So here are the NBA playoff odds at BetOnline, where you can find “Live Betting” at the top of the sportsbook interface, and where there are props-a-plenty for Game 6:

Atlanta Hawks -2 (-107)
Milwaukee Bucks +2 (-113)
Over 217.5 points -110
Under 217.5 points -110

The Question Is, What Would You Do With The Information You Might Have Available To You?

We ask that because these teams don’t offer too much of a random sample of how they would perform with either of those stars. We got an idea about what would happen about Atlanta in their first game without Young, when they were able to move the ball around a lot better, and Milwaukee had some problems on how to defend the Hawks, since their defensive game plan was centered around Young being, in effect, the first, second and third option.

In That Game, Four Atlanta Starters Had Between 15 And 21 Points, And They Had 26 Assists As A Team.

Milwaukee got a little more used to it in Game 5, although the Hawks still shot almost 40% from three-point range. But this time the Bucks had to play without Giannis, who had suffered a hyper-extended knee. And you saw the balance on the part of the Bucks. Four starters had at least 22 points, with 33 for Brook Lopez, who was taking advantage of another Atlanta injury – this one to center Cliff Capela, whose eye has obviously been bothering him.

So now it’s a chore, because you literally don’t know who is going to play until minutes before game time. Our own particular forecast is that with his team facing elimination, you are not going to see Young sitting out for this game. He is going to play if he can walk.

At the same time, Giannis simply might not be able to move all that much. And the Bucks might actually be willing to save him for an all-in Game 7. They would never admit that, of course.

I would expect the Bucks to try and continue with balance. And Lopez, while probably not being able to approach his Game 5 numbers, should be able to exploit Atlanta’s front court to the extent that he should have better than 15.5 points, which is the over-under that is posted at BetOnline (-130).

Another guy who could come up with some numbers in this game – and we say that regardless of whether Young plays or not – is Bogdan Bogdanovic. It was his inability to find the basket in the early part of this series that prevented the Atlanta offense from working at full capacity. He’s had knee problems, and I think a mental block probably developed out of that. In fact, when you go back to the latter part of the series with Philadelphia, he went through a six-game period where he made just five out of 30 from three-point territory. But he’s regained the shooting touch in these last two games, going 13 for 30. He is doing what he was supposed to do, which is to stretch out the Milwaukee defense. So we can go “over” his personal total of 17.5 points (-120) and over 3.5 triples (-114). Whether that helps Atlanta achieve victory and a chance to extend the series, well, that’s anybody’s guess.
