Memphis Grizzlies at Oklahoma City Thunder

On Sunday, April 9th the 10 seed Oklahoma City Thunder will face the 2 seed Memphis Grizzlies for their fourth and final matchup (3:30 PM EST, Bally Sports/NBA League Pass). In fact, it’s the final game of the regular season for both Memphis and Oklahoma City. The Grizzlies lead the series 2-1 over the Thunder. Memphis averages 117.7 points per game against OKC, while the Thunder average 109.0 points per game against the Grizz. However, with both sides locked into where they currently stand for the postseason, it will be interesting to see what lineups they go with for their final matchup of the 2022/23’ season. 

Memphis Grizzlies Breakdown

The Memphis Grizzlies are 51-30 (63.0%) and are locked into the No. 2 seed in the West. The Grizzlies have now made the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, and finished back-to-back years as the 2 seed in the West. Memphis has the best home-record in the NBA (35-6), making their high-seeding incredibly valuable because of home court advantage. According to FiveThirtyEight, Memphis has the best chance of any Western team to represent the conference in this year’s finals. The Grizzlies made headlines this year for some off-the-court antics that distracted from their great season, but with key players back on the floor and focused on the postseason, the Grizzlies will be a formidable opponent for anyone who crosses their path. 

Oklahoma City Thunder Breakdown

OKC is 39-42 (48.1%), and after the Mavericks lost to the Chicago Bulls on Friday, the Thunder officially clinched their spot in the play-in tournament. They are locked-in as the No. 10 seed in the West and will face whoever ends up as the No. 7 seed in the first-round of the play-in tournament. FiveThirtyEight is giving the Thunder an 8% chance to make the playoffs, and virtually zero chance to make the finals, but OKC won’t care. They were not expected to make the playoffs at the start of the year, but defied the odds and proved everyone wrong. Now, with the play-in just a few days away, the Thunder are looking to defy the odds once again.

• Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been this years breakout star and is the top dog in Oklahoma City, averaging 31.4 points, 5.5 assists, and 4.8 rebounds per game
• OKC, the youngest team in the NBA, is locked in as the No. 10 seed in the West

Grizzlies vs. Thunder Prediction

Take the Memphis Grizzlies to win on Sunday. Both the Thunder and Grizzlies are locked into their postseason positions and have no reason to play their starters and risk injury. That means it will be the battle of the benches. OKC is the youngest team in the NBA and their bench is highly inexperienced. I have more confidence in the Grizzlies’ more seasoned second-string. ESPN Analytics is giving Memphis an 82.1% chance to win on Sunday and I am going to the numbers experts in this one.
