Matchup: Denver Nuggets vs. Los Angeles Lakers

The NBA regular season continues with a matchup between the reigning champion Denver Nuggets and the Los Angeles Lakers. According to the sportsbooks this is going to be a close one, as the spread is set at just 1-point. This season the Nuggets are 2-0 against the Lakers, beating LA by an average of 10-points. But the Lakers are nearly back to full strength, and with a 70% win-rate at home, the Lakers are bound to give the champs a competitive match. The Nuggets aren’t the best road team, posting a 17-14 record in away games, but with a 5-game winning streak under their belt, Denver is full of confidence and playing well.

Nuggets vs. Lakers History

This Saturday marks the 192nd regular season matchup between the Denver Nuggets and LA Lakers. The Lakers are one of the oldest teams in the NBA (founded 1946), while Denver was founded 21 years later in 1967. The Nuggets just won their first NBA title last season, while the Lakers are tied with the Boston Celtics for the most titles in NBA history (17). In their head-to-head matchup, the Lakers lead the series 113-78 over Denver, but the Nuggets are on a 3-game win streak over LA. They’ve met in the playoffs several times, the most recent postseason matchup happening last year in the Western Conference Finals, where the Nuggets swept the Lakers 4-0.

Nuggets vs. Lakers Game Predictions

Including the playoffs, the Nuggets are on a 7-game win streak over the Lakers, and this Saturday I’m expecting Denver to extend that run. I’m going with the Nuggets to win the game and cover the 1-point spread. Denver went 4-1 against the spread in their last 5 games, beating opponents by an average of 15.6 points over that same stretch. The Lakers are coming off 2-straight wins, but LA has struggled against the Nuggets, averaging just 106.5 points per game and allowing 116.5 to Denver.

Denver’s best player is undoubtedly Nikola Jokic, the 2x MVP who’s nearly averaging a triple-double (25.8 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 9.3 assists). The Nuggets could be without Jamal Murray, their talented 7th-year point guard, but as of right now he is listed as a game-time decision. The Lakers have the NBA’s all-time scoring leader, Lebron James, who is leading the Lakers in scoring at the ripe age of 39. Paired with Anthony Davis, James and Lakers offer the Nuggets a unique challenge. The sportsbooks got it right, as this is going to be great game, but I’m putting my money on the defending champions.

In summary, here are my picks for the Nuggets vs. Lakers Saturday night matchup:

  • Moneyline Pick: Denver Nuggets (-115)

If you take the Nuggets moneyline (-115): You risk $115 to win $100, for a total payout of $215, if the Nuggets win straight up.

  • ATS Pick: Denver Nuggets (-1.0)

If you take the Nuggets to cover the -1 point spread (-110): You risk $110 to win $100, for a total payout of $210, if the Nuggets win the game.

  • O/U Pick: Under (231.5)

If you take the Under on 231.5 total points (-110): You risk $110 to win $100, for a total payout of $210, if the Nuggets and Lakers combine for less than 231 points.
