Matchup: Denver Nuggets vs. Dallas Mavericks

The reigning champion Denver Nuggets will take on the Dallas Mavericks on the road this Sunday in a pivotal Western Conference matchup. The Nuggets have taken control of the West after winning 9 of their last 10, while the Mavs have fallen to 8th in the conference, 9 games behind Denver. Dallas went 5-5 in their last 10, but they won 4 of their last 5 and are coming off a 7-point loss to the Thunder on Thursday, which snapped a 4-game winning streak for the Mavs. Dallas now faces the champs, who they have yet to beat this season, posting an 0-2 record against Denver. The Nuggets are clearly preparing for a deep postseason run on their path to securing a 2nd-straight title, and while Denver is less of a threat on the road, they’re still favored to beat Dallas on Sunday.

Nuggets vs. Mavericks History

Sunday marks the 189th regular season matchup between the Denver Nuggets and Dallas Mavericks. The series, which began 44-years ago in 1980, has always been close, but Dallas has the advantage with a 96-92 record over Denver. Last season they split the series 2-2, but this year the Nuggets are in a position to sweep the Mavs. Denver is 2-0 against Dallas, averaging 127.5 points in the two games, while the Mavs average 109.0 points per game against Denver. However, Dallas has a real shot at upsetting the Nuggets in this one, as Denver has lost 3 of their last 4 games in Dallas, and are 32-60 (34.8%) versus the Mavericks on the road all-time.

Nuggets vs. Mavericks Game Predictions

Despite not having home court advantage, I still like the Denver Nuggets in this one. For one, Dallas’ leading scorer and offensive engine Luka Doncic is questionable with a hamstring injury, and may not be ready to go versus Denver. Without Luka the Mavs are 3-6, and against a powerhouse like the Denver Nuggets, Dallas will struggle mightily without their best player. Monitor Luka’s status, but even if he plays he clearly won’t be 100%, so I recommend sticking with the Nuggets.

Nikola Jokic is once again the NBA’s leading MVP candidate, as the versatile center is averaging close to a triple-double per game (26 points, 12.2 rebounds, 9.1 assists). Dallas’ biggest weakness is their defense, allowing 119.0 opponent points per game in their last 10, giving Jokic and the Denver offense a chance to shine. The Nuggets average a middling 110.8 points per game on the road, but this season against Dallas Denver had over 120 points in both games. I don’t see the Mavericks No. 22 ranked defensive snapping the Nuggets streak, and Denver will once again prove why they are the best in the west.

In summary, here are my picks for the Nuggets vs. Mavericks Sunday night matchup:

  • Moneyline Pick: Denver Nuggets (-148)

If you take the Nuggets Moneyline (-148): You risk $148 to win $100, for a total payout of $248, if the Nuggets win straight up.

  • ATS Pick: Denver Nuggets (-3)

If you take the Nuggets to Cover the -3.0 Spread (-110): You risk $110 to win $100, for a total payout of $210, if the Nuggets win the game by at least 3 points.

  • O/U Pick: Over (225.5)

If you take the Over on 225.5 total points (-110): You risk $110 to win $100, for a total payout of $210, if the Nuggets and Mavericks combine for more than 225 points.
