Dallas Facing a Must Win Scenario | Mavericks vs Hawks | OSB

Dallas Mavericks at Atlanta Hawks

By Sam Batz

Dallas Mavericks at Atlanta Hawks

The frantic Dallas Mavericks are scheduled to play the equally panicked Atlanta Hawks on the road Sunday, April 2nd (6:00 PM EST, Bally Sports/NBA TV). The Hawks and Mavs are both on the outside looking in on a playoff berth in their respective conferences. Dallas is in worse shape than Atlanta but neither side can afford to lose another game. The Mavs hosted the Hawks back in January for the first meeting, which ended 122-130 Atlanta. Dallas has great players but they are in a rut which consequently makes them the underdog (+115) and the Hawks the favorite (-150).

Dallas Mavericks Breakdown (+115)

If the regular season ended today, so would the Mavericks. At 37-40 (48.1%), the Mavs are the 11th seed in the West and are currently out of play-off, and play-in, contention. Dallas went 3-7 in their last 10 games and were 5-9 (35.7%) in March. They average a middling 113.8 (16th) points per game, but unfortunately average just as many points against (113.3). The Mavericks made a big move picking up 8x NBA All-Star Kyrie Iriving, but the shifty Point Guard hasn’t contributed to more wins in Dallas, as the Mavs are 7-10 since acquiring Irving.

Atlanta Hawks Breakdown (-150)

The Hawks will likely be competing in this year’s play-in tournament for their chance at a 3rd consecutive playoff berth. The Hawks are 38-39 (49.4%) and are currently the 8th seed in the East. They are 4 games out of the top-six, and after going 4-6 in their last 10, Atlanta isn’t looking great. They are coming off a 107-124 loss to the Nets, who are the current 6th seed, but will look to turn it around Sunday at home where the Hawks win 57.9% of the time. The Hawks still have a shot at reaching the postseason, but they may be taking the long way around to get there.

Mavericks vs. Hawks Prediction

Take the Atlanta Hawks to win the game. Both Dallas and Atlanta will enter Sunday’s matchup ready for a fight. They are evenly matched teams and I expect it to be a close game, but the Mavericks play Miami the night before and won’t have a day to rest before facing Atlanta. Dallas is 3-9 on no rest and are 3-7 in their last 10, not including Miami. The Hawks will improve to a .500 record and move closer to securing that coveted playoff position.

Prediction: Atlanta Hawks Moneyline (-150)
