Brooklyn Nets at Phoenix Suns: Odds & Predictions
By Sam Batz
On Thursday, Jan. 19th, the Brooklyn Nets will cross the desert to take on the Suns at Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona. It will be the first matchup of the season between the Nets and Suns, but due to unfortunate injuries on both teams, fans won’t be treated to the star-power this game promised when it was scheduled. Regardless, Brooklyn and Phoenix are evenly matched sides and will each rely on their benches to step-up and secure the victory in what should be a hard-fought contest.
The Suns (21-24) are currently in 12th place in the West. They are 10.5 games behind the conference leading Denver Nuggets, and Phoenix is desperate for a win. The Suns are 1-9 in their last 10 games and have lost three in a row. On Monday, which was the Suns most recent matchup, they lost 106-136 in an embarrassing outing against the Memphis Grizzlies. The Suns are spiraling but will be thankful to be back home after a four-game road trip where they went 1-3 and have a 29.2% win-rate on the season in away games. The Suns will be glad to be back in Phoenix. They have had two days of rest, after the 30-point blowout loss to Memphis, to nurse injuries and plan for their next opponent, the Brooklyn Nets.
Brooklyn (27-16) is currently the 4th seed in the East. They are 6-4 in their last 10 games but, just like the Suns, have lost their last three games. The loss of Kevin Durant has proved to be more consequential to Brooklyn than they had imagined. Without KD providing the spark on offense, the Nets have struggled immensely. They are averaging 101.6 points per game in the last five games while shooting an abysmal 44.8% from the field. Brooklyn has not won a game since Durant went down with a knee injury, and are coming off a 98-106 loss to the San Antonio Spurs. Brooklyn’s point differential is -9.7 in their last three games as their offense has ground to a halt without Kevin Durant’s 29.7 points per game. Brooklyn remains a top-five team in the East, but on Thursday, will look to get their season back-on-track against a Phoenix Suns team with similar ambitions.

Nets vs. Suns All-Time Series
There have been a total of 94 regular season games played between the Nets and Suns. They kicked off the series in 1976 and have been in a vicious battle ever since. The Suns have 48 wins, while the Nets have 46. They have yet to play this season, but after the Suns swept the Nets 2-0 last year, you can bet Brooklyn will be out for revenge.
Historically, the Suns have the edge over the Nets. Phoenix has a 61.7% win-rate against the Nets at home, while Brooklyn is looking at a 38.3% win-rate against the Suns in the desert. Phoenix is 14-7 in their home arena this season, but the Nets are 14-9 on the road. These records simply add to the plethora of evidence that suggest this will be a tightly contested matchup.
Prediction
ESPN’s Match Predictor algorithm has left a margin of just 2.4% between the Nets and Suns chances in Thursday’s matchup. The Suns were given slightly better odds (51.2%) to win, most likely because the game is in Phoenix. Additionally, the Nets have faltered without their champion, Kevin Durant, and are not nearly as strong without him, as their last three games have proved. Furthermore, Brooklyns other star-player, Kyrie Irving, is questionable with a calf injury. Kyrie has a decent chance to play, but may not be fully healthy, which will hurt Brooklyn’s chances considerably.
The Suns are far from where they were last season, but will continue to fight for a playoff spot in a close West Conference race. Phoenix, like Brooklyn, will also be without their best player. Devin Booker, the Suns best Shooting Guard, leads the team with 27.1 points per game, but has been sidelined since December with a groin injury. Without Booker, Phoenix is 3-13 and averaging only 106.3 points per game. It has been rough for the Suns without the three-time All-Star, however, they face a Brooklyn team experiencing a similar, lack-of-talent, plight. Nevertheless, I am confident the Suns will get it done at home against Brooklyn, and will break their three game losing streak to improve to 22-24 on the year.
Prediction: Phoenix Suns Moneyline and the Under.
