Nets vs. Bulls: Odds, Prediction, and Betting Tips

The Brooklyn Nets (nba.com/nets) will travel to the Windy City on Wednesday, Jan. 4th to face-off with fellow Eastern Conference side, the Chicago Bulls (nba.com/bulls). The Bulls are coming off back-to-back losses against the Cleveland Cavaliers, and are 14-11 against Eastern Conference opponents. The Nets have enjoyed a wealth of success, winning their last twelve contests and only dropping one game in December to the league’s best Boston Celtics. Brooklyn is 19-6 against the East and will look to remain in the win column for the thirteenth straight game. Chicago on the other hand, will be tasked with putting an end to Brooklyn’s recent reign of terror.

Brooklyn’s Chances

ESPN analytics is giving Brooklyn a 58.5% chance to win this game. Considering the Nets are in second place in the East with a 25-12 record, those odds seem low. Brooklyn was absolutely dominant in December, posting a 12-1 record while averaging 119.7 points per contest. The Nets are currently on a league leading twelve-game winning streak, and have gone 17-3 in their last 20 matchups. Kevin Durant leads Brooklyn with 29.6 points per game, the sixth best average in the NBA. Kyrie Irving is close behind with 26.2 points per matchup, but has played nine less games than Durant, who has only missed one game all year.

Brooklyn is a power-house and will look to continue their domination against the Bulls. Role players like Seth Curry, Royce O’Neale, and Yuta Watanabe, all of whom are shooting 40% or better from the three-point line, have given Brookln the spark they needed. After several off-the-court distractions to begin the season, the Nets have found their groove. They are averaging 27.8 assists in their last twelve games, with Ben Simmons leading the charge with 6.0 assists per game. At their current rate of play, Brooklyn is arguably the best team in the league right now and I like their chances against Chicago on Wednesday.

Chicago’s Chances

The only silver lining for Chicago in this one is that the game will be played at home. The Bulls have already defeated the Nets in their home stadium this season, and Brooklyn has a 12-7 record on the road. ESPN analytics is giving Chicago a generous 41.5% chance to win, but will need to play a perfect game in order to see that through.

The Bulls continue to struggle, posting a 7-8 record in December. After losing their last two games, they are eleventh in the East with a 16-21 record. They are in the middle of the pack in nearly every statistical metric and can’t seem to find the motivation to string together a series of wins. Their longest winning-streak of the season is just three games and they are 5-5 in their last ten contests. At this rate, Chicago might want to consider coasting for the rest of the season and playing for a high draft pick. I just don’t see Chicago winning this game over Brooklyn.

Nets vs. Bulls All-Time Series

The Nets and Bulls have played each other 180 times in the regular season over the past 45 years. Historically, the Bulls have the advantage, winning 97 of their matchups with the Nets,  compared to Brooklyns 83 wins. The two Eastern Conference sides have played just once this season, with the Bulls taking the win after beating the Nets at home 108-99. The Nets will be out for revenge on Wednesday against the Bulls in just the second game of the new year for both sides.

Key To The Game: Will The Pressure Be Too Much For Brooklyn?

The Nets are a top-tier team with one of the most dynamic offensive schemes in the league. However, it is never easy to win twelve-straight games in the NBA. Brooklyn has had to rely on game-winning shots and unprecedented performances from key players. Durant recorded 25 points and 11 assists in the Nets last game against the Spurs, but will face a tougher defensive side on Wednesday. The pressure of a potential thirteen-game winning streak will weigh heavily on the shoulders of the Nets top performers, and it could be enough to break the red-hot Brooklyn Nets winning streak.

Prediction

After a rocky start to the 2022-23 season, the Nets are finally firing on all cylinders. They are on a league best twelve-game winning streak, and on Wednesday, go up against a spiraling Chicago Bulls team. At their current rate of play, Brooklyn is arguably the best team in the league right now, and the Bulls will struggle to keep the Nets high-octane offense in check. DeMar DeRozan is coming off a 44-point performance in his last game for the Bulls, but Chicago gave up 71-points to Cavaliers point guard, Donovan Mitchell, in that same game. Chicago will struggle to slow down Brooklyns All-Stars, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, and won’t be able to match the Nets on offense.

Prediction: Brooklyn Nets moneyline and the over.
