The NBA has a cross conference matchup slated for this Saturday, as the Boston Celtics prepare to face the Phoenix Suns. Boston is leading both the East and the NBA with a 48-14 record, while the Suns are 6th in the West and 10th in the NBA, 11.5 games behind Boston. The Celtics are coming off back-to-back losses, while the Suns are coming off back-to-back wins. Incredibly, Boston has only suffered two consecutive losses one other time, and have yet to lose three in-a-row this season. The Suns will be hard pressed to hand Boston their first 3-loss streak, but Phoenix did beat the Denver Nuggets this week, and Denver beat Boston on Thursday, so by that logic the Suns have a shot.

Celtics vs. Suns History

This weekend’s contest marks the 136th all-time regular season matchup between the Celtics and the Suns. Boston leads the series 75-60 over Phoenix. Saturday is their first matchup of the current season, but last year the Suns and Celtics split the series 1-1. They also split the series over the last 10 matchups, as they are all squared up at 5-5. Phoenix and Boston have only met in the playoffs one time, which occurred in the 1976 NBA Finals. Boston ultimately won, but after the Suns resurgence, Saturday’s contest could be a preview of what’s to come.     

Celtics vs. Suns Game Predictions

The Celtics have yet to lose 3-games in-a-row this season, and I don’t see it happening in this one, so I’m going with the Boston Celtics to beat the Phoenix Suns. If both teams were at full strength I’d have more confidence in the Suns, but with Devin Booker out, Phoenix is going to struggle to score against Boston’s top tier defense. The Celtics have the 2nd-best defensive ranking, as well as the top offensive ranking, meaning their opponents need to be at their best if they’re going to beat Boston, and without Booker the Suns don’t fit the bill. Phoenix is 6-7 and averages 113.5 points per game with their leading scorer on the bench, giving Boston the means to snap their losing streak.
