Atlanta Hawks Secure Back-to-Back Wins Over Cavaliers, Hornets Struggling

Atlanta Hawks vs. Charlotte Hornets: Atlanta’s Momentum vs. Hornets’ Struggles

As the NBA season heats up, the Atlanta Hawks (9-11) will look to extend their recent success when they square off against the struggling Charlotte Hornets (6-13) on Saturday night at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte. Both teams will be playing their second game of a back-to-back, with tip-off set for 6:00 PM EST. This game is pivotal for both squads, with the Hawks trying to build on recent momentum and the Hornets desperate to end their four-game losing streak.

Atlanta Hawks: Riding High After Back-to-Back Wins Over Cavaliers

The Atlanta Hawks have found their rhythm with two impressive victories over the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers, including a dominant 117-101 win on Friday night as 5.5-point underdogs. In both matchups, the Hawks showcased their firepower, with their most recent victory coming by a solid 16-point margin in an NBA Cup contest.

Leading the charge for Atlanta in their win over Cleveland was De’Andre Hunter, who scored 23 points off the bench. Hunter, recently back from injury, has made a smooth transition into a bench role, contributing significantly despite his reduced minutes. Currently, he is averaging 17.6 points per game and grabbing 4.4 rebounds while providing solid wing defense.

Star guard Trae Young continues to be the team’s centerpiece, averaging 21.8 points and an NBA-leading 12.5 assists per game. Although Young’s shooting struggles from beyond the arc (32.5% on 2.8 threes per game) persist, his playmaking ability remains elite, making him a constant threat on the floor. Young’s backcourt partner, Dyson Daniels, has been a steady contributor, scoring 14.2 points per game and offering solid perimeter defense.

Meanwhile, Jalen Johnson has emerged as one of the breakout players for Atlanta. The versatile 6’8″ forward is averaging 20.1 points and leading the team in rebounding with 10.3 boards per game. His ability to score inside and out has made him a valuable asset for the Hawks, especially in the absence of some of their other key players.

However, the Hawks have one major weakness: defense. Atlanta ranks dead last in the league in three-point defense, allowing opponents to make 16.6 threes per game. While they play at the fastest pace in the league, averaging the most possessions per game, their defensive struggles could come back to haunt them against high-scoring teams.

Charlotte Hornets: Stuck in a Four-Game Losing Slump

On the other side, the Charlotte Hornets have been unable to close out close games and have now lost four consecutive contests. Their latest loss came on Friday night, a heart-wrenching 99-98 defeat to the New York Knicks at home. Despite a strong performance from rookie Brandon Miller, who posted 20 points and six rebounds, the Hornets have failed to generate consistent offense or get stops when needed.

Charlotte is 12th in the Eastern Conference, just 1.5 games behind the 10th spot, which keeps their playoff hopes alive, but their struggles are undeniable. Much of the team’s fortunes rest on the performance of 22-year-old phenom LaMelo Ball. Ball is putting up MVP-caliber numbers this season, averaging 31.1 points, 6.9 assists, and 5.4 rebounds per game. His 4.7 three-pointers per game on 35.6% shooting makes him a lethal scoring threat, but his efforts have often been in vain due to lack of support and defensive lapses.

The Hornets are also starting to build around their other promising young talent, including Miller, who is second on the team with 19.9 points per game and 5.1 rebounds. Miller has emerged as a key contributor from beyond the arc, shooting 3.7 three-pointers per game. However, the Hornets have yet to find the consistency they need to climb the standings.

Adding to the Hornets’ woes, LaMelo Ball missed the Knicks game with calf soreness and will be a game-time decision for this contest. His absence would be a significant blow to Charlotte’s chances of turning their fortunes around.

Conclusion

The Atlanta Hawks come into this game with momentum after their impressive victories over the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Hornets, on the other hand, are struggling to find consistency and will need a big performance from LaMelo Ball—if he’s able to play—to have a chance at stopping their losing streak. The Hawks’ high-scoring offense and defensive vulnerabilities make them dangerous, but the Hornets have the potential to pull off an upset if their shooters get hot and their defense can contain the Hawks’ perimeter game.
