Brooklyn Nets at Philadelphia 76ers

The Brooklyn Nets will travel to The City of Brotherly Love on Wednesday, Jan. 25th to take on the Philadelphia 76ers in a clash between two Eastern Conference titans. Both the Nets and the Sixers are looking to extend their current winning streaks, as well as take down a fellow Atlantic Division rival. Brooklyn and Philadelphia are neck-and-neck in the standings, adding extra pressure to a matchup already set to be an explosive contest.

The Nets are currently the 4th seed in the East with a 29-917 record. They are 5-5 in their last 10 games, but won back-to-back matchups on the road against the Utah Jazz and Golden State Warriors in their two most recent games. The Nets are 16-10 (61.5% win-rate) in away games and will be wrapping up a four-game road trip on Wednesday when they travel to Philadelphia to face the Sixers. Brooklyn is just one game behind Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference standings and will look to close that gap on Wednesday.

The Philadelphia 76ers are currently the 2nd seed in the East with a 30-16 record. They are one of five teams who have broken the 30 win threshold, and now look to make it six consecutive victories on Wednesday after going 5-0 during their recent five game road trip. The Sixers are 13-9 (59.1% win-rate) in away games, but will be back in Philly for Wednesday’s matchup with Brooklyn. Even though the Sixers are coming off a perfect road trip, they will be happy to be back home, where they are 17-7 (70.8% win-rate) in Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center. The Sixers five-game win streak is currently the longest in the league, and Philadelphia certainly won’t want that to end, especially against one of their most threatening divisional rivals.

Nets vs. 76ers All-Time Series

Nets fall to shorthanded 76ers in Ben Simmons' return game

There have been a total of 208 regular season games played between the Nets and the 76ers from 1976 to now. Philadelphia can claim the historical advantage over the Nets, having won 120 games, compared to the Nets 88 wins. The two sides faced each other back in November of the current season, with the 76ers taking home the victory, 115-106, in Philadelphia. They are back in Philly for their second meeting of the season, as the Nets seek redemption and the Sixers look to build on their five-game winning streak and protect their home court.

Nets vs. 76ers Game Changers

Brooklyn Nets:

  • Kevin Durant (knee) will remain sidelined for another two weeks and will miss the game against the 76ers on Wednesday.
  • 3-4 record and average 111.9 points per game without Kevin Durant this season.
  • Averaging 109.8 points per game with a -8.0 point differential in their last 5 games.
  • According to PointsBet, the Nets are +1200 to win the Atlantic Division, and +800 to win the NBA Finals.

Philadelphia 76ers:

  • Joel Embiid (foot) is day-to-day and sports the questionable tag for Wednesday’s matchup against the Nets.
  • James Harden is set to return after missing the Sixers last game against Sacramento.
  • 8-4 record and average 116.2 points per game with Embiid this season.
  • According to PointsBet, the Sixers are +1000 to win the Atlantic Division, and +1600 to win the NBA Finals.

Prediction

Whenever two top-five conference rivals meet, it is always difficult to predict the winner. The 2 seed Philadelphia 76ers face the 4 seed Brooklyn Nets. Both sides rank in the top-ten on offense and defense, meaning their clash on Wednesday should be a tightly contested affair. Additionally, both sides are dealing with injuries to their best players, the Sixers Joel Embiid and the Nets Kevin Durant, and will lean on the rest of the team to make up the ground left behind by the two superstars. Embiid is averaging 33.6 points per game, while Durant was averaging 29.7 points before his injury. The Nets and Sixers will see a noticeable decline without their superstars, but on the flip side, won’t have to face their opponents biggest scoring threat either.

Simply based on how the two teams have played recently, I like the 76ers in this one. Philadelphia has won five-straight away games, and now coming back home with tons of momentum and confidence. Without Embiid, the Sixers have a 66.7% win-rate this season and have averaged 117.0 points over their current five-game winning streak. Brooklyn on the other hand, has struggled with KD and averaged 109.8 points per game, while allowing 111.4 points, in their last 5 matchups. Brooklyn’s Kyrie Irving is averaging an impressive 38.7 points over his last three games, but will face a Philadelphia defense who has allowed the fewest total points (5,070) this season. The 76ers are better than the Nets on either side of the ball, and without Kevin Durant, Brooklyn doesn’t have the offensive firepower to compete against a top-five defense like Philadelphia’s.

Prediction: Philadelphia 76ers Moneyline and the Under.
