SPURS AT WARRIORS – 4/7/16 NBA PICK, ODDS, AND PREVIEW
Now all of a sudden being the winningest team of all-time over a single NBA season has become a dicey situation for the Golden State Warriors, who have lost their aura of “invincibility” on their home floor in a big way. So they are going to have to win their final four games in order to break the record of the Chicago Bulls of 1995-96, who went 72-10 with a player named Steve Kerr on their roster. Now Kerr, the coach, is posed with the challenge of having to balance playing time for his key people with the demands of going after the record. Maybe it hasn’t helped that his team hasn’t even clinched the #1 seed in the West, but they can get that salted away on Thursday night as they do battle with the San Antonio Spurs, who have been their pursuers all year long. This game is slated to get underway at 10:35 PM ET at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, and BetAnySports customers, who can take advantage of reduced juice before the contest begins, can also keep it going after the opening tip, as they challenge the NBA odds in real time through the facilities of Live Betting Extra.
The Warriors are 69-9 straight-up, and on an overall basis they have made money for those who have backed them (41-34-3 ATS). But they haven’t been all that successful of late, covering just three of their last ten. The Spurs have also not met with expectations from the sports betting perspective. They are 65-12 straight-up, just 3.5 games behind Golden State, and they recently became the 19th team to get to 65 wins. But while they were sizzling against the basketball pointspread earlier in the season, they have covered just five of their last 17 to bring the current ATS ledger to 43-34.
The general consensus is that unless one of these teams has a breakdown, they will meet in the Western Conference finals. And when that happens, home court will play a factor; despite their recent slips, Golden State is 37-2 in Oakland, while San Antonio is a perfect 39-0 at the AT&T Arena, which is where these teams will play on Sunday.
In the NBA odds that have posted on this game, with reduced juice, at BetAnySports, the Warriors are the favorites:
Golden State Warriors -7.5 (-105)
San Antonio Spurs +7.5 (-105)
Over 209 points -104
Under 209 points -106
The Warriors, or at least many of them, have been rather open about the fact that they are anxious to set this all-time wins record. Still, All-Star forward Draymond Green has talked of this team “losing focus,” which would seem strange. Andrew Bogut, who is returning to the lineup in Thursday, along with Andre Iguodala, last year’s NBA Finals MVP, says that in the bigger scheme of things, the record is “small potatoes.” Kerr has said that he will give players rest if they ask for it, and perhaps we will see how much of an issue that becomes after this. Remember, the Warriors can lose a game and still tie Chicago’s record, and FiveThirtyEight.com, the site that is run by Nate Silver of ESPN, has given Golden State a 13.4% chance to make history free and clear, with a 55.8% chance to tie (72 wins).
BetAnySports patrons who want to focus on this game will have to take into consideration the motivational level on the part of the Spurs, who are notorious for resting players. They are still mathematically in the race for the top seed in the West, and can certainly help their cause with wins over Golden State with wins in two of the four remaining games, but coach Gregg Popovich may be looking at things a bit more realistically. Sure, the Spurs, with their glittering home record, would love to have four games out of seven at the AT&T Arena, but Popovich is definitely a guy who looks “big picture,” and that means a strong possibility that he isn’t going to extend key people like Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and even LaMarcus Aldridge and Kawhi Leonard. The thing is, with Popovich, you really don’t know what is going to happen until after the game starts.
