Toronto Blue Jays Narrowly Clinch Wild Card Berth
The Toronto Blue Jays are back in the playoffs for the 2nd consecutive season. The Jays finished the season as the 5th-best team in the AL, recording a 89-73 record, and are one of three teams to come out of the AL East. The Blue Jays held their while competing in arguably the best division in the MLB, and are looking to make it past the Wild Card Round for the first time since 2016.
The Minnesota Twins clinched a playoff spot after securing the top spot in the AL Central. The Twins finished atop the division with an 87-75 record, but Minnesota was actually 7th in the American League, 2 games behind the Blue Jays, and only made the playoffs because of a weak division.
I like the Toronto Blue Jays in this one. The regular season series between Toronto and Minnesota was tied 3-3, but the Blue Jays faced tougher opponents throughout the entirety of the 2023 season and still finished with a better record than the Twins. Toronto recorded more hits (1423) than Minnesota (1335), as well as a better ERA (Blue Jays: 3.78; Twins: 3.87). Additionally, the Blue Jays are a decent road team, posting a 56.8% win-rate in away games.
