San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers: Analysis, Prediction, and Betting Tips

Sam Batz

giants vs dodgers

The San Francisco Giants will face their division rivals the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday, June 17th (6:10 PM PST, NBC Sports Bay Area/Spectrum SportsNet). It’s the second series of the season between the two NL West rivals. The Dodgers won the first series 2-1, scoring 19 runs in three games, while the Giants fell short with just 11 runs. The most recent MLB Power Rankings have the Dodgers at No. 5 and the Giants at No. 20, a difference of fifteen spots within the ranking, which is why LA enters as -1.5 run favorite, with a moneyline priced at -140. The Dodgers-Giants rivalry goes back 133 years (1890-2023), and Saturday is slated to be the 2,559th matchup is one of the longest and fiercest rivalries in American sports.

The San Francisco Giants (+1.5; ML +115)

The Giants are on the rise, and after a slow start to the season, SF has found their groove. The Giants have improved every month record-wise, as they went 11-15 (42.3%) in April, 17-12 (58.6%) in May, and are 8-4 (66.7%) in June. Overall, SF is 36-32 (52.9%), which puts them at 3rd place in the NL West, 5th place in the National League, and 12th place in the MLB. In their last 10 games, the Giants went 7-3, averaging 6.2 runs per game over the same stretch, making them the hottest team in the division. San Fran ranks among the top-10 in runs, runs against, home runs, and RBIs, and could prove troublesome for their long-time rivals, although the Giants are being given just a 38.9% win-probability for Saturday.

The Los Angeles Dodgers (-1.5; ML -140)

The LA Dodgers had an incredible season last year, going 111-51 (68.5%) on their way to recording the most single-season wins in franchise history. This year, the Dodgers are currently 39-30 (56.5%), and while they’re not projected to record 100+ wins again, they are being given a 94% chance to reach the postseason. LA is 2nd in the NL West, 3rd in the National League, and 6th in the MLB, making them a favorite to not only make the playoffs, but to win the World Series. But like any good team, the Dodgers are taking it one-game at a time, and on Saturday,  LA will be at home, where they’ve played their best baseball of the season (home win-rate: 66.7%). In the Dodgers last 20 games against San Francisco, Los Angeles went 15-5 (75.0%), giving them the edge phycologically over the surging Giants.

Giants vs. Dodgers Prediction

Take the Dodgers to beat the Giants on Saturday, June 17th. SF hasn’t announced who will be starting on the mound for this one, but they are going with John Breddia the night before, leaving room for ace pitcher Logan Webb, who has 91 strikeouts in 91.1 innings, to go Saturday. If Webb starts, the Dodgers will face a tough test, but I still like LA on Saturday, regardless of those on the mound for the Giants. The Dodgers have the most home runs (116), the 3rd-most total runs (381), the 3rd-most RBIs (368), which tells me they know how to score runs. The Giants have a respectable defense (6th-fewest runs allowed), but LA will have the edge at home, and I’m putting my money on the Dodgers to win on Saturday.

Prediction: Los Angeles Dodgers Moneyline (-140)
