Struggling Padres Host Struggling Diamondbacks
An NL West showdown between San Diego and Arizona will begin on Thursday. It will be the 10th matchup of the season between the Padres and Diamondbacks. The series is 5-4 in favor of the Padres, but neither San Diego nor Arizona has had an impressive season despite our lofty expectations.
The Diamondbacks are 60-60 on the year, putting them 3rd in the NL West, 9th in the National League, and 18th in the MLB. Arizona’s season has been a mix of triumph and tragedy. They went 52-39 (57.1%) in the first half of the season, but are an abysmal 8-21 (27.6%) since returning from the All-Star break. The Dbacks beat the low-ranked Rockies on Tuesday, but lost 7 of their last 10, averaging 3.5 runs, 8.0 hits, 1.0 home runs, and 5.2 runs against per game.
San Diego may post better numbers than the Dbacks, but the Padres are severely lacking in the win column. At 57-63, San Diego is 4th in the NL West, 10th in the National League, and 22nd in the MLB. They’ve allowed the fewest runs (490) in the NL, but lack the verve needed to finish games. Like the Dbacks, the Padres went 3-7 in their last 10, averaging 4.3 runs, 8.3 hits, 0.9 home runs, and 5.2 runs against.
I like the Diamondbacks in this one. Zac Gallen, who is 12-5 with a 3.24 ERA, will be on the mound for Arizona. The last time Gallen was on the mound against San Diego, the Dbacks won 3-0, and I expect a similar result here.
So for our Diamondbacks vs. Padres expert pick, take the Arizona Diamondbacks Moneyline (+100) on Thursday.
