St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers: Prediction, Player Props, & Betting Tips

By Sam Batz

cardinals vs dodgers

On Sunday, April 30th the Los Angeles Dodgers will host the St. Louis Cardinals (4:10 PM EST, Bally Sports/MLB Extra Innings/ESPN+). Sunday will be the final matchup of their 3-game series. The Dodgers beat the Cardinals 7-3 on Friday, then they play again on Saturday (April, 29th at 9:10 PM EST), and will wrap things up with a Sunday finale. St. Louis will enter the finale as +1.5 run underdogs with a moneyline priced at +130. The Dodgers on the other hand are -1.5 run favorites with a moneyline priced at -160.

Away Team: St. Louis Cardinals (+1.5; ML +130)

The Cardinals are off to a slow start with a 10-17 (37.0%) record. St. Louis is last in the NL Central, 14th in the National League, and 26th in the MLB. At 25% odds, they are not expected to make the playoffs, and are projected to end the year just under .500. Coming in at 3rd-place with 247, the Cardinals can hit the ball, but they give up 4.8 runs per game. St. Louis went 3-7 in the last 10 games, and while there’s still time to turn things around, for now, it looks like the Cardinals are in a deep slump, and they won’t be expected to beat the surging Dodgers.

Home Team: Los Angeles Dodgers (-1.5; ML -160)

The Dodgers are 14-13 (51.9%) through the first month of the season. At just above .500, the LA Dodgers are 2nd in the NL West, tied for 6th in the National League, and tied for 11th in the MLB. ESPN’s most recent MLB Power Rankings have the Dodgers at No. 8, 13 spots ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals (No. 21). LA has one of the best chances of any team to make the playoffs, and while they aren’t expected to win as many games as last year (111-51 record in 22’) they are expected to beat St. Louis in a 3-game series. The Dodgers went 6-4 in their last 10 games, and even though they are favored to win Sunday, LA gives up 4.7 runs per game, and if their batting isn’t there, the Cardinals could upset the Dodgers fairly easily.

Cardinals vs. Dodgers: Player Props

Paul Goldschmidt (Cardinals 1B): Over 0.5 Hits (-230)

Goldschmidt is the leading batter in St. Louis is a .310 average. In 100 AB’s, Goldschmidt has 31 hits, 14 RBIs, 4 HRs, 17 BB, and 17 Runs. He’s been a consistent batter for the Cardinals, averaging 1.2 hits per game in his last 10 games. Against Syndergaard, Goldschmidt is 5-14 with 3 RBIs in 16 plate appearances. The 35-year old Goldschmidt knows the Cardinals need him to do well in order to win, and I predict he will go over 0.5 hits on Sunday.

Freddie Freeman (Dodgers 1B): Over 0.5 Hits (-280)

Freeman is batting .302, which leads the Dodgers between batters with 50+ ABs. In 106 ABs, Freddie Freeman has recorded 32 hits, 4 HRs, 9 RBIs, 14 BB, and 21 runs. He averaged 1.0 hit per game in his last 10 games. Freeman is 0-2 in 2 plate appearances against Jake Woodford, but with an OPS of .852, it’s only a matter of time before he records his first hit against Woodford. I predict Freeman will go over 0.5 hits on Sunday.

Cardinals vs. Dodgers Prediction

Take the St. Louis Cardinals to win on Sunday, April 30th over the LA Dodgers. The Cardinals are a great hitting team, and by the third game against LA, St. Louis will have figured out how to tee off on the Dodgers pitchers. The Cards are being given a 42.3% chance to win Sunday, but with Dodgers pitcher Noah Syndergaard (0-3) on the mound, St. Louis will get men on base early and often. St. Louis pitcher Jake Woodford isn’t much better, and will likely give up a few home runs to LA, who has the 2nd-most HRs (47) in the MLB, but Syndergaard gives up hits, which will greatly benefit the Cardinals. It will be a close game with a lot of runs, but I’ll take St. Louis  on Sunday.

Prediction: St. Louis Cardinals Moneyline (+130) and the Over (8)
