Los Angeles Angels at Baltimore Orioles: Prediction and Betting Tips

Sam Batz

angels vs orioles

On Wednesday, May 17th the Los Angeles Angels will take on the Baltimore Orioles in the 3rd matchup of their 4 game series (6:35 PM EST, Fox Sports West/MLB Extra Innings/Mid-Atlantic Sports Network). The Orioles have 4 more wins than the Angels and 5 fewer losses. Baltimore is favored for Wednesday’s contest with a moneyline priced at -130, while the Angels are the underdogs at +120. LA won the first game of the series 9-5 over the Orioles on Monday, yet Baltimore remains the favorite. The Orioles have fewer runs, hits, RBIs, and home runs compared to the Angels, but Baltimore has given up 26 fewer runs than LA, which is why they have the edge in this matchup.

The Los Angeles Angels (+1.5; ML +120)

The Angels have a stacked roster with two of the best players in baseball (Mike Trout & Shohei Ohtani) but LA is struggling to win games. They are 22-20 (52.4%) on the season and find themselves in 3rd place in the AL West, 9th place in the American League, and 14th place in the MLB. The Angels won just 4 of their last 10 games, and went 2-3 in their last 5. They are coming off a big win over the Orioles on Monday, where do-it-all superstar Shohei Ohtani went 4-5 from the plate with 2 singles, 1 triple, and a home run, just missing the cycle, and pitched 7.0 innings with 4 hits, 5 runs, 5 strikeouts, and 3 home runs. Ohtani is 5-1 on the mound, but he can’t pitch every night, and the Angels often struggle when their ace isn’t available.

The Baltimore Orioles (-1.5; ML -130)

The Orioles are off to a good start and will look to remain near the top of the standings with a win on Wednesday. Baltimore is 26-15 (63.4%) and are 2nd in the AL East, 2nd in the American League, and are tied for 4th in the MLB with the Atlanta Braves. The Orioles went 5-5 in their last 10 games, but won 3 of their last 5. Baltimore is averaging 5.0 runs per game and are giving up 4.4 runs to their opponents, which is nearly even with LA, but the Orioles have been excellent at home, winning 65% of the time, while the Angels have been inconsistent on the road. Ryan Mountcastle and Adley Rutschman lead Baltimore with 42 hits a piece and 14 combined home runs, which the Orioles will need against an Angels side that is averaging almost 9 hits per game.

Angels vs. Orioles Prediction

Take the Angels to win on Wednesday. Despite their middling record, the Angels matchup well against the Orioles, and if Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani have big games, LA will win easily. Baltimore’s pitching has been better than the Angels, but Los Angeles’ batting has been better than the Orioles. I am expecting an evenly matched, back-and-forth kind of game between these two in their 3rd consecutive game. But I like the Angels batting over the Orioles fielding for Wednesday’s matchup.

Prediction: LA Angels Moneyline (+120)
