San Diego Padres at New York Mets

On Tuesday, April 11th the New York Mets will host the San Diego Padres at Citi Field for the second of a three game series (7:10 PM EST, TBS/Bally Sports/SportsNet). ESPN Analytics is giving the Mets a 63.8% chance to win the game. New York is favored by -1.5 runs with a moneyline priced at -145. The Padres are the underdogs priced at +120, but as underdogs, San Diego is 3-1 this season. Both San Diego and New York are expected to make the playoffs this season, and their matchup on Tuesday is expected to be a close but thrilling contest.

San Diego Padres Breakdown (+120)

The Padres went 89-73 last season and made the playoffs for just the second time in 10 years. They are 6-4 (.600) through the first 10 games of the young season, but are looking like playoff contenders once again. They are coming off a 3-0 sweep of the Atlanta Braves, winning 10-2 on Sunday in the final game of the series. San Diego is tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the lead in the NL West, but the Padres are looking like a team that could win the division. San Diego will be in New York for all three games, but after going 3-1 in away games so far, the Padres are looking like a formidable road team.

New York Mets Breakdown (-145)

The New York Mets made the playoffs last year for the first time since 2016, eclipsing 100 wins for the first time since 1986, the year they won the World Series. This season, the Mets are 5-5 (.500) through their first 10 games, and are coming off a 2-1 series win over the Miami Marlins. New York is 2nd in the NL East after going 2-1 at home, and 3-4 on the road. According to FiveThirtyEight, the Mets have a 71% chance to make the playoffs. New York averages 3.9 runs per game thus far, but their pitching, led by Max Scherzer, is what sets them apart as a top-tier program.

Padres vs. Mets: Game Changers

San Diego Padres

  • Designated Hitter Nelson Cruz leads the Padres with a .350 batting average, Cruz has 7 hits, 2 homeruns, and 9 RBI’s off of 20 AB’s
  • Xander Bogaerts (.324) & Manny Machado (.308) lead the Padres with 12 hits each
  • Ace Pitcher Yu Darvish has played just 1 game for the Padres so far

New York Mets

  • Last years AL Cy Young Award winner, Justin Verlander, remains OUT and will not see the mound until the end of the April
  • Starling Marte leads the Mets with a .303 batting average on 33 AB’s, Marte also leads the team with 10 hits
  • Pete Alonso is off to a great start, recording 5 HR’s, 8 runs, and 11 RBI’s

Padres vs. Mets Prediction

Take the San Diego Padres to win on Tuesday. The Padres are off to a better start than the Mets, and that doesn’t mean dynamics won’t shift later down the line, but for now, San Diego is the better side. The Padres score more runs, have a better batting average, get more RBI’s, hit more homeruns, and have won 75% of their games on the road. The Mets have better pitchers but the Padres have some serious batters. It will be a close game, as both of these sides are projected to lead their divisions, or at least make the playoffs as a Wildcard, but for now I am going with the Padres.

Prediction: San Diego Padres Moneyline (+120)
