Rangers Face Rays In Wild Card Round
The Tampa Bay Rays are looking to carry their success from the regular season into the playoffs. The Rays finished 2nd in the American League with a 99-63 record, and are back in the playoffs for the 5th consecutive year. The Rays maintained a consistent win-rate throughout the regular season, and posted a winning record in every month but July (8-16), making Tampa Bay the favorite to win their Wild Card series over the Rangers.
The Texas Rangers ended the season with a 90-72 record, making them the 4th best team in the AL, but putting them 9.0 games back from Tampa Bay. Texas ended the season as the MLB’s 3rd-best offense, recording 881 runs, 1470 hits, and 233 home runs, but they struggled defensively, allowing the 7th-most runs (716) in the AL.
I like the Tampa Bay Rays in this one. The Rangers are formidable at the plate, but the Rays are right behind them. Tampa recorded 860 runs, 1432 hits, and 230 home runs, which compares fairly evenly with Texas offensively. The difference here is defense. The Rays allowed the 3rd-fewest runs (665) in the AL this season, giving up 51 fewer runs than the Rangers. Defense wins championships, and the Rays defense will win them Game 2.
So for our Rangers vs. Rays expert pick, take the Tampa Bay Rays Moneyline for Game 2 on Wednesday.
