This game brings the three-game series to a close between these two teams from the AL East. Tampa Bay has a sizeable lead on the Yankees in the division, nearly leading by 9 games. A win here could mean even further separation from New York.

One thing the Yankees are planning on is to close this series out with a win. Now to be fair, every team should look to do that but you can tell just how serious the Yankees are. Cole is a seasoned pitcher and so far this season has a starting record of 10-5, with a 2.74 ERA. He leads the Yankees in all three of the major pitching categories listed by ESPN, ERA, Wins, and Strikeouts. The Yankees overall are one of the best pitching teams in the league, the trouble has come at the plate for them this year. This is strange because in recent seasons the Yankees were notorious for their heavy hitters, but the roles have reversed this year. Tampa Bay Rays Preview
The Rays are taking the opposite approach as the Yankees in the final game of the series. Instead of starting one of their best pitchers, they’re going with perhaps the worst. The 1-2 Luis Patino will take the mound for the Rays on Thursday. Patino has an ERA of 5.26, which is bad news for the Rays. The only upside is the Yankees have struggled at the plate the entire season.
We should likely expect Patino to be pulled off the mound relatively quickly if the hits get too out of hand. The Rays will also have to be great at the plate on Thursday when they face Gerrit Cole, the Yankees best pitcher.
