Ok, let’s get to our Mariners vs Rangers Prediction.

Braves Need Ocuna Jr.

The National League East division has not started the way that many predicted it would. Opening the season the books had the Braves favored to win the division at +140, then followed by the New York Mets at +155, then the Philadelphia Phillies at +380, Miami Marlins at +1400 and finally the Washington Nationals at +4500. Roughly 14 games into the season, None of those teams are in that order. Nerd Mets, who are expected to be good but not quite this good, have shot out to already a four game lead in the division with a record of 10 wins and four losses. And the Atlanta Braves, who entered this season with the third best odds to win the entire World Series, have already fallen four games back and are two games under .500 at 6-8.

The only team the book seems to be correct about where the Miami Marlins, who they predicted to have a bad season and nothing to start the season, has proven otherwise. Or has it? The Marlins are currently four and seven and come in riding a two game losing streak, but the numbers don’t tell the whole story for this team. The first statistic to look at to prove this narrative is the run scored to run allowed differential. The Washington Nationals, Atlanta Braves, and Philadelphia Phillies all have a worse plus/minus run differential, than the Miami Marlins at -19, -14 and -10 respectively. The Marlins, on the other hand, are only a -4. To put that in perspective, the Milwaukee Brewers have a current run differential of minus three and their record is 8-5. Additionally, the Marlins ranked in the top half of the MLB in the three main categories of team ERA, team on base percentage, and team batting average.

The Atlanta Braves are the top half of the MLB in On Base Percentage as a team, team batting average, and team runs scored per game, but they rank a concerning 25th in team ERA. On the mound for the Marlins will be Trevor Rogers, who just one year ago was a finalist for Rookie of the Year, and had he not gotten injured, many believe he would have won it. His last start, five days ago against the Phillies, was less than ideal, as it was the shortest start of his career. He pitched 1.2 innings and allowed seven runs on four hits, earning himself an ERA of 12.75! But don’t be too concerned as he is just one season away from a year in which he started 25 games and had an ERA of 2.61. When asked about his poor showing against the Phillies, he simply stated that he was hungry to get back out there, and still  has a lot to learn. Expect a rebound.
