When I saw the Dodgers and Pirates scheduled to play tonight, I expected the Dodgers to be fairly big favorites, but being nearly three to one favorites at -290 seemed a bit big at first. But upon second glance, it is easy to understand why. The LA Dodgers have a record of 32-14, the second best record in the MLB, and have won 8 of their last 10 games. The Pirates, on the other hand, have a record of 19-26, and in their last 10 games have lost 6 of them. Both teams enter coming off wins, and the pitching duel in this game is a lopsided one. Starting for the Dodgers will be Walker Buehler who has a record of six wins and one single loss. Sporting a 2.91 ERA and 42 strikeouts on the year, he has vastly outperformed his counterpart in this game, the Pirates’ Zach Thompson. Thompson’s ERA is nearly double that of Buehler’s as he sits at 5.50. 

All these factors lead to the Dodgers being such massive favorites, and when we look at the batting statistics, it gets even more understandable and lopsided. The Dodgers rank top 7 in the MLB in team statistics such as batting average, runs, hits, home runs, slugging percentage, and on base percentage. They are first overall in runs, on base percentage and slugging percentage on top of that. The Pirates on the other hand rank bottom 5 in every one of the previously stated categories. The pitching team matchup is even more lopsided, as the Dodgers rank top 3 in nearly every major statistic for pitching, compared to the Pirates who rank bottom three in nearly all those same stats.
