Tonight the Atlanta Braves will travel to take on the Oakland Athletics. It will be the first game of only a two game series between the two organizations. Kyle Wright is said to make the start for the Braves. Wright (17-5) earned the win over Colorado on Wednesday, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out six batters over seven scoreless innings. Wright completed seven scoreless frames for the second straight contest, and he consequently took over the major-league lead with his 17th victory. The right-hander allowed at least one baserunner in six of his seven frames but didn’t give up any extra-base hits and was aided by a pair of double plays. Wright has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign, supplementing his league-best win total with a 2.85 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 150:43 K:BB over 154.2 innings. Wright will be going for win number 18 tonight, and I expect him tor get it.
The Oakland Athletics are not a good hitting team so this makes a good matchup for Wright. Oakland ranks either 29th or 30th in team batting average, team runs, team hits, team on base percentage, slugging percentage, and home runs. In addition, this team hasn’t scored more than 5 runs in their last 6 games. Cole Irvin will start for them. Irvin (7-11) picked up the win Tuesday, coughing up five runs on nine hits and a walk over 5.1 innings in a 10-6 victory over the Nationals. He struck out six. He has an ERA of 3.35 on the year along with a record of 7-11.
